Vistapac Trays Produced for Geest Help Avocado Sales

Purpose-designed trays from Lin Pac are believed to be the first ever produced for retail sales of avocado pears

An innovative Vistapac Oriented Polystyrene produce tray supplied to Geest Plc is helping to boost sales of their avocado pears. Custom-formed for Geest's Produce Marketing Division by Lin Pac Plastics, the packs provide enhanced visual appeal and a high degree of protection for three avocados. This is believed to be the first time that avocado pears have been retailed in purpose-designed packs.

Geest previously supplied avocado pears in stretch wrapped, general purpose plastics trays. Because these were originally designed for carrying pears, they were unable to provide the protection necessary to prevent bruising of the differently sized avocados. Geest concluded that a purpose-designed pack was necessary. As a result, Lin Pac was asked to produce a compartmented tray specially contoured to hold a wide variety of shapes and sizes of avocado pear.

Philip Smith, of Geest's Exotics Department, describes the advantages gained from the new packaging: 'There are important mechanical benefits provided by the Vistapac tray. It is kinder to the fruit; it gives better support in transit and results in much less damage. In fact, it would be fair to say that the new pack has almost eliminated our customer's rejection of damaged packed avocado pears.

'From the marketing point of view, the pack has definitely improved our product image. Being longer and thinner than the pack previously used, it has allowed us to convert to flow-wrapping. This leaves the product free - and highly visible - inside sealed wrappers. It has also enabled us to apply a new label which carries a reverse-side recipe and helps to make what is altogether a very attractive pack'.
