VISITORS

   Dead people visit us
as we drop off to sleep.
   They penetrate our dreams
   as easily as music
   from the house next door
   or water soaking into cloth.

   It's nice to see them
well or ill, freed up at last
   from weather, sex and breath
   and when we wake
   they linger, looking on
the way that clouds look on, or leaves.
