Viscoelastic properties of the polymer binder affecting the processability, structure and properties of dry surface treated papers.

APPLICATION: Dry surface treatment is an on-line, water-free, and noncontact method of coating a paper surface.

In the dry surface treatment (DST (1) (DeSTination) Contrast with SRC, which is an abbreviation of "source."

(2) (Digital Signal Trust Company, Salt Lake City, UT, www.digsigtrust.com) An organization that sets up and manages PKI systems for companies and industry groups.
) method of coating, the coating layer is applied to the substrate in the form of dry powdered particles and is fixed on the surface in a heated nip. The base paper does not get wet, and the coating does not penetrate the surface. The coating system consists of two components: pigments and a latex binder. The conditions used in fixing the DST coating should have a strong bearing on the choice of the binder.

In the DST method, processability and the properties of the coated paper Coated paper is paper which has been coated by an inorganic compound to impart certain qualities to the paper, including weight and surface gloss, smoothness or ink absorbency. Kaolinite is the compound most often used for coating papers used in commercial printing.  are affected by the temperature-dependent viscoelastic Adj. 1. viscoelastic - having viscous as well as elastic properties

properties of the latex binder. A binder with a high gel content reduces the likelihood that coating will stick to the heated roll. A high gel content also improve the surface strength of the coated paper. Coating coverage is more uniform with smaller aggregates, which were associated with latexes with high glass-transition temperatures in this study. For the finer coating particles, the coating layer deposits more homogeneously with the electrostatic application and may be compacted further during calendering calendering, a finishing process by which paper, plastics, rubber, or textiles are pressed into sheets and smoothed, glazed, polished, or given a moiré or embossed surface. .

In general, better coating coverage can be achieved with DST than through conventional coating with blade metering. The coating structure produced by DST is more open in certain respects, with larger pore sizes, greater porosity, and higher oil absorption. However, DST papers are comparable in many ways to conventional wet-coated papers. View this paper online at http://www.tappi.org/index.asp?pid=29479
