Modeling and process simulation provide an effective way to understand these increasingly complicated bleach plants. Due to a lack of predictive bleaching models, existing process simulators cannot address bleaching-specific issues, such as the impact of chemical charges on pulp brightness. We have developed a set of predictive bleaching models, which are presented in this series of papers. Combining the new bleaching models with existing process simulators, most issues related to bleach plants, such as the effect of COD carryover on final brightness, can now be modeled. The Virtual Bleach Plant (VBP) is a new simulation approach that tries to "duplicate" real mill bleach plants. Users can selectively generate simulation results for their own mill applications. In this paper, the VBP is applied to two mill bleach plants. In Case A, we demonstrate the VBP's ability to duplicate real mill bleaching. In Case B, we use the VBP as a tool for mill bleach plant improvements. The simulation predicts the effects of shifting from 65% [ClO.sub.2] substitution to ECF and adding peroxide peroxide (pərŏk`sīd), chemical compound containing two oxygen atoms, each of which is bonded to the other and to a radical or some element other than oxygen; e.g. reinforcement in caustic extraction.
