Johnson objected to a biology book because she said it taught evolution as fact instead of theory. She also demanded that the school district teach creationism creationism or creation science, belief in the biblical account of the creation of the world as described in Genesis, a characteristic especially of fundamentalist Protestantism (see fundamentalism). alongside evolution in biology classes. She is asking that the court overturn the school board's rulings. Johnson's lawsuit claims her request is not religious in nature. Her petition states that "both the theory of evolution and theory of intelligent design have scientific grounding and well respected support." Barry R. Taylor, attorney for Johnson, told the Virginian-Pilot before the school board vote that teachers should teach both evolution and creationism, "and leave the decision up to the students." The Supreme Court has ruled that schools may teach about explanations of life on earth, including religious ones, in comparative religion or social studies classes. In science classes, however, teachers may present only genuinely scientific critiques of, or evidence for, any explanation of life on earth. |
