after receiving a Certificate of Public Need ("COPN COPN Certificate of Public Need (Virginia Commissioner of Health) ") from the Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Health. The FONAR Upright(TM) MRI will be installed on the Campus of Bon Secours St. Mary's Hospital in Richmond, VA.

Robert B. Stroube, M.D., M. P. H., Commissioner of Health for the Commonwealth of Virginia, stated in his approval letter that, "Positional MRI technology, currently not available in PD15, offers the ability to scan the spine in weight-bearing positions showing dynamic effects that may otherwise go unseen, and thereby appears to offer the benefit of diagnosing diseases and conditions not readily diagnosable without this technology."

Dr. Stroube continued, "The design of the positional MRI scanner allows scanning of large and claustrophobic patients and allows the scanning of children without anesthesia."

Dr. Stroube added that, "the project proposed by Tuckahoe would situate sit·u·ate

of a long-standing group of orthopaedic physicians, allowing those physicians to evaluate and gauge the efficacy of the technology and to assist in defining whatever operational role it may have in serving the public's general need for diagnostic imaging, all without significantly disrupting utilization at existing providers of MRI services."

Raymond Damadian, M.D., president and founder of FONAR, said, "I agree completely with Dr. Stroube. The FONAR UPRIGHT(TM) MRI often sees pathology that is missed on a recumbent-only MRI. This added information will help surgeons make more accurate diagnoses that will lead to better outcomes for their patients. The most costly surgery, both in terms of economics and patient care, is surgery that is undertaken where the diagnoses may be sub-optimal thereby impeding the prospect of an excellent surgical result."

"It is also gratifying grat·i·fy

to note that the Commonwealth of Virginia has granted a third COPN for a FONAR UPRIGHT(TM) MRI," said Dr. Damadian. "In fact, three area hospitals, Virginia Commonwealth University Formed by a merger between the Richmond Professional Institute and the Medical College of Virginia in 1968, VCU has a medical school that is home to the nation's oldest organ transplant program. , Bon Secours St. Mary's Hospital and Children's Hospital A children's hospital is a hospital which offers its services exclusively to children. The number of children's hospitals proliferated in the 20th century, as pediatric medical and surgical specialties separated from internal medicine and adult surgical specialties.  supported Tuckahoe Orthopaedic's application."

We know others in Virginia that have intentions to purchase the FONAR UPRIGHT(TM) MRI and we look forward to working with them as they negotiate the COPN process in order to bring this important diagnostic advancement to their practice and their communities. We look forward to working with Tuckahoe and other groups in Virginia," added Dr. Damadian.

About FONAR

FONAR(R) was incorporated in 1978, making it the first, oldest and most experienced MRI manufacturer in the industry. FONAR introduced the world's first commercial MRI in 1980, and went public in 1981. Since its inception, FONAR has installed hundreds of MRI scanners worldwide. Their stellar product line includes the FONAR UPRIGHT(TM) MRI (also known as the Stand-Up stand·up or stand-up

With nearly one half million patients scanned, the patient-friendly FONAR UPRIGHT(TM) MRI has a near zero claustrophobic rejection rate by patients. A radiologist said, "FONAR UPRIGHT(TM) MRI - No More Claustrophobia claustrophobia /claus·tro·pho·bia/ (-fo´be-ah) irrational fear of being shut in, of closed places.

Approximately 85% of patients are scanned sitting while they watch a 42" flat screen TV.
