Virginia Commonwealth University dance majors debut in New York.


Despite lost luggage and a weekend forecast of endless rain, the enthusiasm of dance majors and recent graduates from Virginia Commonwealth University Formed by a merger between the Richmond Professional Institute and the Medical College of Virginia in 1968, VCU has a medical school that is home to the nation's oldest organ transplant program.  remained unquenchable.  students and alumni (including 2006 graduates Leigh Brinson and Donna Vaughn, and alumni Christina Briggs, Patti Gilstrap, Jason Akira Somma, and Samantha Speis) was a hit. The performance included six works, ranging from Somma's quirky short film Waltzing Jessica, to Speis' intense group piece, On the Verge On the Verge (or The Geography of Yearning) is a play written by Eric Overmyer. It makes extensive use of esoteric language and pop culture references from the late nineteenth century to 1955. . Eleven current students and four alumni made up the accomplished cast, whose impassioned performances inspired a prolonged ovation from the crowded house.

While in New York, the students Look modern class with Monica Bill Barnes at Dance New Amsterdam, and jazz with Lane Napper at Broadway Dance Center, among others. About performing in the cool, open space of St. Mark's, junior Ami Dowden-Fant said, "I felt like I could fly in there."
