Virginia: Park Authority keeps control of trails.The Supreme Court of Virginia The Supreme Court of Virginia is one of the oldest continuously active judicial bodies in the United States. It has its roots in the seventeenth century English legal system, which was instituted in Virginia as part of the Charter of 1606 under which Jamestown, Virginia was ruled in favor of the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority The Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority is an association dedicated to providing people in Northern Virginia with access to parks and nature reserves and to protect Northern Virginia's rich heritage of woods, meadows, lakes and streams from the threat of suburban sprawl. (NVRPA NVRPA Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority ) allowing the group to retain control of the land along the Washington & Old Dominion Railroad Regional Park (W&OD Trail). The Court confirmed the decision made by a lower court that NVRPA has the right to control and collect fees for third party use along the trail. "This decision goes a long way towards protecting the trail for the public," said NVRPA Executive Director Paul Gilbert. "This is a victory for the more than 3 million citizens who utilize the W&OD trail annually." NVRPA had been in a long dispute with Dominion Virginia Power Dominion Virginia Power is a power company located in the state of Virginia. The company's foundings date back to the beginnings of the United States and include such luminaries as James Madison and George Washington. Even after a proposed rate increase of 3. over fees it charges the company to run power lines buried under the trail. These fees go to upkeep of the 100-foot-wide W&OD Trail, which features a 45-mile asphalt trail for walking, running, bicycling and other activities and a 30.5-mile, parallel, gravel bridle path for horseback riding and hiking. |
