Virata's UPnP Software Brings Home Networking to Life

Through Device Sharing and Interaction

Virata(R) Corporation (Nasdaq:VRTA VRTA Vibration Reduction Test Aircraft (CH-47D Helicopter) ) today announced that its Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) software has been selected for use in future imaging and printing products from the Hewlett-Packard Company. Virata's UPnP software is expected to help HP provide customers with next-generation products that can automatically communicate and share data with any Windows XP The previous client version of Windows. XP was a major upgrade to the client version of Windows 2000 with numerous changes to the user interface. XP improved support for gaming, digital photography, instant messaging, wireless networking and sharing connections to the Internet.  PC or UPnP-enabled device on their home network. Product offerings from HP likely to incorporate the software include the HP Jetdirect family of print servers used to connect HP's printers, copiers, fax machines, scanners, digital imaging equipment and multi-function peripherals to a network.

"With our UPnP software, companies such as HP can easily add UPnP functionality to their products -- turning them into intelligent devices that work right out of the box by simply plugging them into the home network," said Steve Makgill, vice president of software product marketing at Virata. "Our UPnP solution is ideal for many markets, including home routers, PC peripherals, imaging products and consumer electronics, and can enable our customers to compete successfully in these growing new markets."

"HP shares with Virata a commitment to make network connectivity for devices simple, and Virata's UPnP software is a critical piece in making this possible," said George Mulhern, vice president and general manager of connectivity, HP Imaging and Printing Systems. "Virata's UPnP software complements HP's vision of an always on/always connected world, helping us introduce products that bring the benefits of the networked home to our customers."

What is UPnP

UPnP is a networking architecture that enables network devices of all forms, such as PCs, PDAs, printers, broadband routers, consumer electronics, etc., to be truly plug and play on the home network. UPnP devices are designed to seamlessly connect and communicate with each other over any TCP/IP TCP/IP

What makes UPnP even more appealing is the fact that it builds upon existing standards and technologies, such as TCP/IP and HTTP HTTP

, and leads the way to greatly simplifying consumer-service activation for a wide range of service types. Currently supported by Windows Me and Windows XP, UPnP is positioned to become a powerful networking technology and is capable of enabling a truly intelligent home or office, where smart devices communicate, self configure and bring a wide array of services and information to the users' fingertips "Fingertips" is a 1963 number-one hit single recorded live by "Little" Stevie Wonder for Motown's Tamla label.
