Violist, wind quintet to perform at UO.

Two guests, violist Marcus Thompson and the Imani Winds Imani Winds is an American wind quintet based in New York. The group was founded in 1997 and is known for its adventurous programming, which includes newly composed works, as well as compositions featuring African, Latin American, and American influences.  quintet, perform this week at the University of Oregon The University of Oregon is a public university located in Eugene, Oregon. The university was founded in 1876, graduating its first class two years later. ``Happy Birthday, Mozart,'' a chamber concert on historical instruments, celebrates the 250th birthday of the composer.

Presented by UO's Early Music Program, the all-Mozart program will be performed by Anne Dhu McLucas, fortepiano for·te·pi·an·o

Violist Marcus Thompson will perform music by Johannes Brahms, Antonin Dvorak and Joaquin Turina tonight as part of a UO guest-recital series that showcases musicians of color not of the white race; - commonly meaning, esp. in the United States, of negro blood, pure or mixed.

The program is Brahms' Sonata in F Minor for Viola and Piano, Turina's `Scene Andalouse' for string quartet string quartet

Ensemble consisting of two violins, viola, and cello, or a work written for such an ensemble. Since c. 1775 such works have been perhaps the predominant genre of chamber music.
, piano and solo viola, and Dvorak's Quartet No. 6 (``American'').

Joining Thompson will be UO faculty Kathryn Lucktenberg and Fritz Gearhart, violins; Yoshiro Etsuki, viola; Steven Pologe, cello; and Victor Steinhardt, piano.

Thompson is a member of the viola faculty at New England Conservatory of Music New England Conservatory of Music, at Boston, Mass.; coeducational; est. 1867, chartered and opened 1870. It is closely associated with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Berkshire Music Center at Tanglewood.  and violist of the Boston Chamber Music Society.

Thompson earned his doctorate at the Juilliard School. He lives in Boston where he heads programs in chamber music and performance studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Massachusetts Institute of Technology, at Cambridge; coeducational; chartered 1861, opened 1865 in Boston, moved 1916. It has long been recognized as an outstanding technological institute and its Sloan School of Management has notable programs in business, .

The recital begins at 8 p.m. in Beall Hall. Tickets, available at the door, are $9; $5 for students and senior citizens.

The Imani Winds

The Imani Winds, an African-American/Latino woodwind quintet that performed at last year's Oregon Bach Festival The Oregon Bach Festival is an annual celebration of the works of Johann Sebastian Bach, held in Eugene, Oregon in late June and early July. It was co-founded by German conductor Helmuth Rilling and the former president of the American Choral Directors Association, Royce Saltzman, , will visit the UO to perform music by Maurice Ravel, Astor Piazzolla, Mario Lavista and others.

The Chamber Music Series concert begins at 3 p.m. in Beall Hall. Reserved seat tickets, ranging from $12 to $29, are available through the Hult Center box office (682-5000) or the EMU ticket office (346-4363).

The concert will be preceded by a free talk at 2 p.m. in Room 198 of the music school.

The Imani Winds also will have a two-day residency at the UO. Events are free and open to the public.

Monday, 4 p.m.-5 p.m. Presentation for middle and high school students; Beall Hall.

Tuesday, 9:15 a.m.-9:50 a.m. `Understanding Music,' a basic music course for nonmusic majors; Room 198 in the music school.

Tuesday, noon-2 p.m. Master class for high school and college woodwind students; Beall Hall.

UO Jazz Lab Bands

Monday, Room 178

UO Jazz Lab Bands will present an evening of instrumental jazz, beginning at 8 p.m. in Room 178 of the music school. Tickets, available at the door, are $5, $3 for students and senior citizens.
