Violator the Album Makes a Huge Entrance On the Charts: Highest Debut On Billboard Top 200 Pop Albums At No.8; No.1 R&B Album.

NEW YORK--(ENTERTAINMENT WIRE)--Aug. 18, 1999--

Chris Lighty is smiling wide today as the compilation of artists on his Violator Records/Management roster makes two stunning debuts on the Billboard charts. Leading with the radio smash, "Vivrant Thing,"-the first solo music from Q-tip since the breakup of his legendary group A Tribe Called Quest-VIOLATOR THE ALBUM (Violator/Island Def Jam), makes the Highest Debut on Billboard's Top 200 Pop Albums Chart. The Soundscan was 115,683, over 3 times the sales of the next highest debut, Rahzel's MAKE THE MUSIC 2000. Equally impressive is VIOLATOR'S THE ALBUM's debut at the very top of the Billboard R&B Album Charts, at No.1.

"With the double shot on the R&B and Pop charts, it's proved once again the widespread appeal of the Violators-from the street guys like Noreaga to my soldier Busta Rhymes-to the smooth R&B of Next, the Latin rap of the Beatnuts to the blazing new Violator, Mysonne," Lighty says from Los Angeles, where three Violators-Busta Rhymes, Missy Elliott and Noreaga are nominees, presenters or performers on The Source Hip Hop Awards, which airs Friday on UPN.

Fourth Source Awards nominee Q-tip (for work in Tribe) had to skip the festivities to continue recording his solo album, which is expected for release by the end of the year. The widespread appeal of his "Vivrant Thing" has been helped along by massive radio play, video showings on MTV, BET, The Box and M2, as well as a recent Late Show With David Letterman performance (with Busta also doing "Bus-A-Bus Remix" from the compilation) and an assortment of national concert dates. The second single from VIOLATOR THE ALBUM, is "Say What" from LL Cool J, whose double-platinum MR. SMITH and his new upcoming album (both Def Jam) are both Executive Produced by Lighty.

Chris Lighty, along with Violator Management President/Co-Owner Mona Scott add VIOLATOR THE ALBUM to their unprecedented success, which has included selling between 8 and 12 million records per year over the 4 years. With the '99 releases-including the platinum-plus seller from Busta Rhymes (E.L.E.-THE FINAL WORLD FRONT (Flipmode/Elektra)) and new CDs from Missy Elliott (DA REAL WORLD (Gold Mind/Elektra)), from Mobb Deep (MURDA MUZIK (Loud)), Noreaga (MELVYN FLYNT DA HUSTLA (Penalty/Tommy Boy)), Mysonne (LIFE TEACHES AND REALITY BITES (Violator/Island Def Jam)), and of course, Q-tip's as-yet-unnamed solo CD (Arista)-sure to break all company records.
