Corp., the leading supplier of data protection products including the award-winning StandbyServer product family, Monday announced the IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries)  Netfinity Cluster Pack.

Cluster Pack for IBM Netfinity and IBM PC A PC made by IBM. IBM created the PC industry in 1981 when it introduced its first model with 16KB of RAM. However, it was way off in its estimates, projecting that 250,000 units would be sold in the first five years. In fact, about three million IBM PCs were sold in that period.  Server will be available exclusively through IBM and it includes the choice of five different high-availability options: 1) Vinca High Availability Also called "RAS" (reliability, availability, serviceability) or "fault resilient," it refers to a multiprocessing system that can quickly recover from a failure. There may be a minute or two of downtime while one system switches over to another, but processing will continue.  for NetWare and IBM ServeRAID II Ultra SCSI The designation for various high-speed SCSI interfaces. The original specification was Ultra SCSI, followed by Ultra2, Ultra3, etc. For details, see SCSI.  Adapter, 2) Vinca High Availability for IBM OS/2 and IBM ServeRAID II Ultra SCSI Adapter, 3) StandbyServer for NT, 4) StandbyServer for OS/2 Warp The client version of the OS/2 operating system. It includes peer-to-peer networking, fax and communications programs, multimedia viewing and editing applications and IBM Works (word processing, spreadsheet, database and other office tools).

Introduced in late 1994 as Version 3.
 and 5) StandbyServer for NetWare/IntranetWare.

"IBM is pleased to expand its relationship with Vinca," said John McAdaragh, director of strategy and offerings, IBM Netfinity Marketing. "This announcement is part of the overall clustering and high-availability strategy for IBM Netfinity and IBM PC Server systems and demonstrates the commitment between IBM and Vinca to develop and deliver cross-platform solutions to our customers."

First active/active, shared-SCSI configuration for NetWare and OS/2

The IBM Netfinity Cluster Pack includes two new products, Vinca High Availability for NetWare and IBM ServeRAID II Ultra SCSI Adapter and Vinca High Availability for IBM OS/2 and ServeRAID II Ultra SCSI Adapter. This shared-disk functionality maximizes the use of data storage hardware while minimizing the cost when implementing a high-availability server system.

These new products allow NetWare/IntranetWare and OS/2 customers to use a shared IBM disk system between the two active servers. If one server is taken off-line, the work it was performing is picked up automatically by the remaining server with minimal or no interruption.

IBM Netfinity Cluster Pack is a cross-platform solution with StandbyServer

IBM Netfinity Cluster Pack is a complete cross-platform solution that ships with StandbyServer for NT, NetWare/IntranetWare and OS/2. This gives customers with heterogeneous networks the freedom to choose the network operating system An operating system that is designed for network use. Normally, it is a complete operating system with file, task and job management; however, with some earlier products, it was a separate component that ran under the OS; for example, LAN Server required OS/2, and LANtastic required DOS.  platform they need.

In addition, being able to standardize on one high-availability solution across the enterprise minimizes the cost of training personnel. Cluster Pack for IBM Netfinity and IBM PC Servers will also include Co-StandbyServer for NT as soon as it is available.

IBM Netfinity Cluster Pack has the advantages of real-time, block-level mirroring

To add flexibility and complete the IBM offering, IBM Netfinity Cluster Pack users also have the option of configuring the clustered servers using Vinca's real-time, block-level mirroring. Real-time mirroring has a number of advantages to consider when implementing a high-availability solution.

First, Vinca's mirroring technology is based on a shared-nothing architecture, which has the benefit of no single point of failure. Second, the configuration is typically less complex than other configurations making the installation and maintenance of the cluster easier and less time consuming.

Last, Vinca's technology allows the servers to be separated by long distances such as another floor of the same building or even another building in a campus environment.

"We are pleased that IBM continues to choose Vinca's cross-platform solutions and experience in the industry when selecting clustering partners," said Alan Rudd, president, Vinca Corp. "The combination of IBM's powerful hardware platform and their ability to service customers, and Vinca's tried and tested data protection software, gives customers a system that is affordable and one they can trust."

IBM Netfinity Cluster Pack is available through IBM

IBM Netfinity Cluster Pack will be available in the fourth quarter of 1997 through IBM. All five software options are on the CD ROM CD ROM Compact Disk Read Only Memory  disk included in the package. A customer can choose any one of the five products for each package purchased. For more information contact your local IBM business partner or an IBM marketing representative.
