Viisage selected for U.S. government's largest smart card program.


Viisage (Nasdaq:VISG VISG Visually Impaired Support Group ), a provider of advanced technology identity solutions and parent company of Trans Digital Technologies (TDT), today announced that it has been selected by the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area.  Department of Defense (DoD) to support the production of secure, smart credentials as part of the agency's Common Access Card (CAC See Consumer Advisory Council. ) program. When closed, the estimated total order from the DoD is expected to be in the range of $6 to $10 million. The selection follows rigorous testing by three nationally recognized commercial laboratories--EDS, L3 and Exponent--under the direction of Telos Corporation. The CAC program has been recognized with major industry awards and is widely viewed as the best program of its type in the world. With over four million cards in circulation, the smart card technology maintains critical identity information to grant individuals varying privileges. DoD uniformed duty employees, qualified reserve personnel, DoD civilians, and authorized contractors use these standard identification cards to gain physical access to secure areas and logical access to the Department's computer networks. The card also serves as the authentication token A security device given to authorized users who keep them in their possession. To log into the network, the security "card" or "token" may be read directly like a credit card, or it may display a changing number that is typed in as a password.  for the Department's computerized public key infrastructure. The future DMDC roadmap for the program includes expanded use of biometrics and movement toward a contactless smart card A smart card that uses radio frequencies to provide a wireless connection to the reader. The transmission range is only a couple of inches, but allows the card to be quickly passed by a reader in applications such as secured entrances. See smart card and UltraCard. .
