It would seem to be the height of fantasy: four young adventurous Frenchmen going by the names of Dumas's fictional musketeers hatch a plot to kidnap Jefferson Davis early in the Civil War and almost get a chance to carry it off. When one is injured, three forge ahead, riding through Confederate lines, staying in wartime Richmond, Virginia Richmond IPA: [ɹɯʒmɐnɖ] is the capital of the Commonwealth of Virginia, in the United States. , falling in love, and finally escaping back to Union territory in the Shenandoah Valley Shenandoah valley, part of the Great Valley of the Appalachians, c.150 mi (240 km) long, N Va., located between the Blue Ridge and the Allegheny mts. The valley is divided into two parts by Massanutten Mt., a ridge c.45 mi (70 km) long and c.3,000 ft (915 m) high. .

The adventure was true: it was the story of Victor Vifquain, a young Frenchman who eventually attained the rank of brevet BREVET. In France, a brevet is a warrant granted by the government to authorize an individual to do something for his own benefit, as a brevet d'invention, is a patent to secure a man a right as inventor.

It should not be confused with the similarly named Army of Tennessee, a Confederate army named after the State of Tennessee.  and was decorated for his bravery in battle. Much later, in 1900, he wrote up his exploits in a book entitled Link From a Broken Chain. Now, edited and carefully annotated by two modern historians, one of whom is his great-grandson, his story amazes, engages, and provides rare insight into a momentarily lighter side of the Civil War.
