Videonics and Sharp Electronics Demonstrate New High-Speed Video DSP Technology at Embedded Systems Conference.

SAN JOSE San Jose, city, United States
San Jose (sănəzā`, săn hōzā`), city (1990 pop. 782,248), seat of Santa Clara co., W central Calif.; founded 1777, inc. 1850.
, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 5, 1998--Sharp Digital Information Products and Videonics, Inc., (Nasdaq:VDNX) today announced that they are demonstrating their new high-speed video DSP (1) (Digital Signal Processor) A special-purpose CPU used for digital signal processing applications (see definition #2 below). It provides ultra-fast instruction sequences, such as shift and add, and multiply and add, which are commonly used in math-intensive  technology at the Embedded Systems Embedded systems

 Conference.

This is the first demonstration of the technology resulting from the partnership between Sharp Information Products and Videonics. The partnership will result in the development of core Digital Signal Processing See DSP.

Videonics is the first company to use Sharp Digital Information Products' new DDMP DDMP Deliberate Decision-Making Process
DDMP Data Driven Media Processor (Sharp Corp)
(Data-Driven Multimedia Processor) technology. "The power, speed, and design advantages of Sharp's DDMP solution are an excellent match for the kind of cost-effective, powerful, and flexible designs Videonics products demand," said Videonics' Vice-President of R&D, Steve Peters Stephen J. "Steve" Peters (born January 19, 1963) is a Canadian politician. He is currently a Member of Provincial Parliament of the Ontario legislature, and serves as a Cabinet Minister in the government of Dalton McGuinty.

Peters was born in St.
.

"Because DDMP design is straightforward, it's relatively easy to develop and debug To correct a problem in hardware or software. Debugging software means locating the errors in the source code (the program logic). Debugging hardware means finding errors in the circuit design (logical circuits) or in the physical interconnections of the circuits. . This is an important consideration in the fast-paced world of video production."

Videonics is known for using advanced technology to achieve the highest price/performance in video editing and processing equipment. Its mixers and video titlers are industry standards in video production.

"DDMP is an extremely capable high-speed data processor, especially suitable for such tasks as video signal processing. Therefore, we are very encouraged that DDMP has been adopted by Videonics, an eminent video editing equipment manufacturer", said Dr. Souichi Miyata, General Manager of the Media Processor Business Development Project at Sharp Corporation in Tenri, Japan.

"We hope to build a strong partnership into the future with Videonics in the area of new product development."

Videonics' Chief Technologist, Mark Hahn, cited the power of the DDMP and its design approach as key factors in its selection. "Sophisticated manipulation of high-bandwidth video streams requires significant processing power. The DDMP is the most cost-effective way we have found to achieve this kind of power. It replaces the hard tooling expense and long lead time associated with ASICs. Sharp's 'flowgraph' design methodology is a natural for hardware engineers."

"DDMP functions can be altered by reloading Reloading

A term lenders commonly use to refer to the habits of borrowers taking out loans to repay the balance on other loans. Often reloading is done to take advantage of lower interest rates offered by other loans, and potential tax benefits.
its program, making it much more flexible than traditional hardware or ASIC (Application Specific Integrated Circuit) Pronounced "a-sick." A chip that is custom designed for a specific application rather than a general-purpose chip such as a microprocessor.  designs," Hahn continued.

"It is highly scalable, so adding processors increases overall system throughput. Its clockless (asynchronous Refers to events that are not synchronized, or coordinated, in time. The following are considered asynchronous operations. The interval between transmitting A and B is not the same as between B and C. The ability to initiate a transmission at either end. ) design simplifies board layout and reduces RF interference design headaches. And we have had excellent support from Sharp in incorporating this new technology."
