Display Systems, Cape Canaveral Cape Canaveral (kənăv`ərəl), low, sandy promontory extending E into the Atlantic Ocean from a barrier island, E Fla., separated from Merritt Island by the Banana River, a lagoon; named (1963) Cape Kennedy in memory of President John  division will introduce its auto-calibrating system to enable low-cost, scalable, seamless, high-resolution and large scale displays for training, simulation, immersive, command and control, planetariums, entertainment and other specialized applications. The prototype display will be introduced at its Booth 560 at the Interservice/Industry Training, Simulation, and Education Conference (I/ITSEC I/ITSEC Interservice/Industry Training, Simulation, and Education Conference ) Show held in Orlando, Florida The city of Orlando is a major city in central Florida and is the county seat of Orange County, Florida. According to the 2000 census, the city population was 185,951. A 2006 U.S.  from December 1-4, 2003.

The innovative display technology is driven by a cluster of relatively low-cost personal computers connected to commodity projectors that are arbitrarily oriented to cover the entire display surface. The multi-PC based display system automatically calibrates the relative position of the camera(s) and the projectors onto any given arbitrary display surface, from either the front or rear, warps the image, corrects for the photometric pho·tom·e·try

differences in the image overlap, and renders a uniform seamless display.

The display features a seamless, spherical display of 150 degree HFOV HFOV High Frequency Oscillatory Ventilation

and +90 degree/-20 degree VFOW for future training, simulation and other specialized applications. The high resolution display has an optical resolution of 3.2 arc-min per line pair at a constant eye relief of 42 inches. The system is capable of auto-calibrating the seamless displayed image comprised of 22.1 MPixels within ten minutes, and rendering the display at a sub-pixel accuracy at 60 frames per second. The system is scalable to higher resolution and a wider field of view simply by integrating additional rendering elements.

The high resolution is achieved by the seamless blending of 15 commodity LCoS projectors each having native resolutions of 1400 x 1050 pixels. Each rendering element is comprised of an off-the-shelf PC, network card, graphics accelerator and projector. A pan-tilt digital camera observes the relative position and the field of view of each projector. Communication and synchronization are accomplished via a commodity ethernet switch.

The salient features of the Agility(TM) Auto-Calibration System facilitate scalable, deployable and reconfigurable displays with multiple rendering elements of arbitrary sizes that can be quickly installed and configured. Future applications include interactive, immersive displays for user interactive training applications in domes and caves where a non-intrusive tracking system tracks the user's view point within the environment, and presents a coherent, geometrically correct image to the user.

Auto-calibration features in development will incorporate the camera-based detection of colorimetric col·or·im·e·ter

and photometric variations within and between the rendering elements, and compute correction functions that are digitally applied to each rendering element. Future developments will incorporate self-monitoring to provide real-time corrections for photometric, colormetric, and geometric variations due to lamp aging and environmental variations, and include a gamma correction feature to provide uniform tracking of the colorimetry colorimetry

To enable cost-effective solutions for high resolution and large scale displays utilizing clusters of projectors, VDC Display Systems will introduce application specific high contrast projectors with proprietary high magnification, geometrically corrected optics and long life illumination sources.
