Area veterans are shrinking the distance between Iraq and Oregon down to the size of a phone call.

The Oregon Paralyzed Veterans of America The Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA) is a congressionally-chartered veterans' service organization in the United States of America, founded in 1946. It describes itself as having "developed a unique expertise on a wide variety of issues involving the special needs of our members  are buying phone cards for the Oregon National Guard, recognizing the hardships faced by these soldiers who leave civilian lives to serve overseas, said Kevin O'Reilly Kevin O'Reilly is Hurling player for Dublin Senior Team and Lucan Sarsfields. The veterans also hope to raise $24,000 to buy more phone cards for Oregon guardsmen and reservists in Iraq and Afghanistan.

War is hard on all soldiers, O'Reilly said, but the burden is especially difficult for the citizen-soldiers who, unlike their active-duty counterparts, leave jobs to fight.

"There's more stress on their families, they're giving up an already established civil life," O'Reilly said. "They're taking cuts in pay and in some cases in medical benefits, and with these cuts, they're leaving their families behind."

The veterans also plan to buy phone cards for Oregonians in the Idaho National Guard The Idaho National Guard consists of the:
