Porter joined TV Guide as publisher in 1998 and was promoted to executive vice president and general manager of media sales, overseeing all ad sales efforts for print, online, cable, in-store and interactive television. He helped grow print ad pages to an all-time high and launched an interactive programming guide as a portal for digital television.

He served five years with Reader's Digest, joining the magazine in 1993 as associate publisher. Porter also helped re-launch Prevention Magazine and secured two consecutive record years in revenue during his tenure from 1991-1992.

Porter's other magazine experience includes positions with Woman's Day Woman's Day is an American magazine aimed at a female readership, covering such subjects as food, nutrition, fitness, beauty and fashion. It was first published in 1931 as a free A&P in-store menu/recipe planner, calculated to make customers buy more by giving them meal  and Ziff-Davis Publishing.
