The technical expertise and extensive experience in large antenna systems of two Vertex subsidiaries -- Vertex Antennentechnik GmbH and Vertex Antenna Systems Division (formerly TIW Tiw (tē`), Norse Tyr (tür), ancient Germanic god. Systems, Inc.) -- was instrumental in the award of this contract to Vertex. Vertex Antennentechnik, the company's German subsidiary, will have responsibility for the mechanical and servo subsystems for the project. The full-motion mechanical tracking design allows for 360 degrees in azimuth travel range and elevation motion range of 0 degrees to 90 degrees. The antenna pedestal will contain a 7-mirror Beam Waveguide System that leads the RF beam to the feeds and the transmit/receive equipment inside the tower. This design assures the maximum stiffness required to point the 500-ton antenna with the aid of a fully-digital servo system at deep space probes within an accuracy of 0.01 degrees. The antenna will be operational in August 2001 at ESA's site in Perth, Australia.
