Vertex Communications Corporation Awarded SED Contract

KILGORE, Texas, Sept. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Vertex Communications Corporation (Nasdaq: VTEX), a leader in the design and manufacture of satellite communications earth station products for commercial and governmental use, announced today that the Company was recently awarded a contract exceeding $8 million by SED Systems Inc., a CALIAN company located in Saskatoon, Canada.

The technical expertise and extensive experience in large antenna systems of two Vertex subsidiaries -- Vertex Antennentechnik GmbH and Vertex Antenna Systems Division (formerly TIW Systems, Inc.) -- was instrumental in the award of this contract to Vertex. Vertex Antennentechnik, the company's German subsidiary, will have responsibility for the mechanical and servo subsystems for the project. Vertex Antenna Systems Division, located in Santa Clara, California, will provide overall optical and RF design, as well as the design, production, integration and testing of the dichroic plate and feeds.

The project involves the design, manufacture, and installation of a new 35-meter Deep Space Antenna for the European Space Agency (ESA). The antenna will be used in Deep Space and High Elliptical Orbit Programs and is specifically designated for use in the 10-year ROSETTA interplanetary mission to the Comet WIRTANEN. The antenna will be able to simultaneously receive in S-Band and X-Band while transmitting in S-Band. It is designed for later upgrading to additional X-Band transmission while simultaneously receiving in S-, X- and Ka-Bands.

The full-motion mechanical tracking design allows for 360 degrees in azimuth travel range and elevation motion range of 0 degrees to 90 degrees. The antenna pedestal will contain a 7-mirror Beam Waveguide System that leads the RF beam to the feeds and the transmit/receive equipment inside the tower. This design assures the maximum stiffness required to point the 500-ton antenna with the aid of a fully-digital servo system at deep space probes within an accuracy of 0.01 degrees. The antenna will be operational in August 2001 at ESA's site in Perth, Australia.

Rex Vardeman, President and CEO of Vertex stated, "The award of this highly specialized antenna and RF feed system confirms Vertex Communications Corporation's position as the industry leader in deep space antenna technology. Vertex Antennentechnik and Antenna Systems Division will be ably supported by other Vertex divisions as we address the difficult technical solutions required for this project."

Vertex is a full-service company offering standard products, turnkey installations, site testing, and after-sale service and maintenance on a complete line of earth station products for commercial applications.
