Verso also announced that Transtates Communications Associates, Ltd., a government licensed provider of long distance telephony services in Abuja, the capital of Nigeria, is implementing the NACT Prepaid Solution to support a new prepaid long distance calling card service.

"We are implementing our prepaid long distance calling card service with Verso's NACT solution because it passed the stringent approval processes required for certification by the NCC," said Garenfei Dorgu, managing director of Transtates Communications Associates. "But in addition, the turnkey solution distinguished itself by seamlessly integrating the switching hardware, provisioning software and communication applications, as well as delivering the after-sales support and service that we require in order to become a major player in the rapidly expanding Nigeria telecommunications marketplace."

Under the direction of the NCC, Nigeria is actively deregulating de·reg·u·late

Nigeria has a population of about 150 million in an area the size of Texas, but only has slightly more than 220,000 telephone lines. The NCC recognizes that the country's telecommunications infrastructure is currently under-serviced and is working rapidly to expand telephony services throughout the country by certifying key telecommunications solutions and granting licenses to companies such as Transtates.

"Nigeria is one of the most progressive countries in Africa in terms of deregulating and privatizing their telecommunications industry and we are honored to be an early entrant en·trant

"Transtates Communications Associates represents our first implementation in Nigeria, and with a certified prepaid platform that supports the most common form of payment for services in the country, we are certain it will not be our last.
