Versatile arts center offers many benefits.Byline: CAROLYN KRANZLER For The Register-Guard IN THE PAST YEAR I have heard more talk about an arts facility for Eugene than in the entire 30 years I've lived here. Several ad hoc For this purpose. Meaning "to this" in Latin, it refers to dealing with special situations as they occur rather than functions that are repeated on a regular basis. See ad hoc query and ad hoc mode. groups have met to advance the concept with discussions of galleries, a museum and an art teaching facility. To push the conversation forward, I propose that we, our municipality MUNICIPALITY. The body of officers, taken collectively, belonging to a city, who are appointed to manage its affairs and defend its interests. of Eugene, establish a visual arts visual arts npl → artes fpl plásticas visual arts npl → arts mpl plastiques visual arts npl → center rather than an art museum. This proposal expands the idea to include the arts beyond the traditional concept of fine arts. We are now very well provided with performing arts venues. We have the Hult Center, the WOW Hall, the McDonald Theater, the new Shedd Performance Hall and many, many small performing arts venues for dance and music in the center of our city. We are not well provided with arts exhibition spaces. In spite of all the arts-related activities we found in the City Club of Eugene Arts Survey, exhibition spaces for the visual arts are few and declining as I write. Besides a few private galleries, we have only the Jacobs Gallery in the city center. It is time for our mayor, our City Council, our Chamber of Commerce and our citizens to find a way to move from concept to reality and allow Eugene to develop as a regional arts center. My proposal involves the establishment of a visual arts center with a mission beyond that of the traditional art museum and gallery. Its purpose would be to nurture NURTURE. The act of taking care of children and educating them: the right to the nurture of children generally belongs to the father till the child shall arrive at the age of fourteen years, and not longer. Till then, he is guardian by nurture. Co. Litt. 38 b. , exhibit and record our local artistic heritage. It would accomplish this through exhibitions, outreach and education. The following lists are meant to widen the scope of our thinking about ways to involve our population in the visual arts: The visual arts center's exhibition functions would include: - Galleries for traditional arts such as painting, watercolor, printmaking printmaking Art form consisting of the production of images, usually on paper but occasionally on fabric, parchment, plastic, or other support, by various techniques of multiplication, under the direct supervision of or by the hand of the artist. and sculpture. - Continuing to run the Jacobs Gallery as our city's premier gallery, but as part of a larger entity. - Exhibition galleries for photography, fiber arts and other art forms. - Space for exhibits by youth and children. - Architecture displays to educate the general public. - An art film venue. - An exhibition space for artwork from our sister city programs and the Pacific Rim Pacific Rim, term used to describe the nations bordering the Pacific Ocean and the island countries situated in it. In the post–World War II era, the Pacific Rim has become an increasingly important and interconnected economic region. . - An expanded Mayor's Art Show to begin to build a local, permanent city art collection by funding a purchase award each year. - A re-established "outdoor art" exhibit and funding for a purchase award. These sculptures could be installed along our newly designated "Great Streets," the first of which would be our promenade promenade Public place where people walk (or, in the past, rode) at leisure for pleasure, exercise, or display. Promenades are pedestrian avenues pleasingly landscaped or commanding a view, often located along waterfronts and in parks. Vehicular traffic may or may not be restricted. link to the federal courthouse district. - A new home for the Lane County Historical Museum, including a display of history of our city. - Historic preservation Historic preservation is the act of maintaining and repairing existing historic materials and the retention of a property's form as it has evolved over time. When considering the United States Department of Interior's interpretation: "Preservation calls for the existing form, displays and maps for walking tours of our historic neighborhoods. A goal of the center would be to improve public access to historic records and photographs. The visual arts center's outreach efforts would include: - A lecture hall lecture hall n → sala de conferencias; (UNIV) → aula lecture hall lecture n → amphithéâtre m for the arts, architecture and local history. - A series of lectures or travelogues with a focus on the arts, architecture and landscape architecture. - Efforts to coordinate the Art in the Schools and Architecture in the Schools programs, along with new programs for presentations on local history and preservation. - Mentoring experiences for children, youths and adults. The visual arts center's education programs could include: - A public art school for all ages. - A drop-in art programs for youth. - Classes, self-funded through fees, in all areas of art: drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, fiber arts, jewelry jewelry, personal adornments worn for ornament or utility, to show rank or wealth, or to follow superstitious custom or fashion. The most universal forms of jewelry are the necklace, bracelet, ring, pin, and earring. , leatherwork leath·er·work n. 1. Decorative work crafted in leather. 2. The woods used vary greatly in hardness and grain. , mask making, clay, computer art, graphic design, etc. - Daytime as well as evening classes. - A dialogue with Lane Community College and the University of Oregon The University of Oregon is a public university located in Eugene, Oregon. The university was founded in 1876, graduating its first class two years later. The University of Oregon is one of 60 members of the Association of American Universities. Art Education Department concerning outreach programs and student teaching opportunities. A visual arts center would have economic development goals as well: - The center could collaborate with local businesses, the Chamber of Commerce and the Convention and Visitors Center for marketing and investment opportunities, using the arts and the historic museum as the catalyst for development as so many other communities across the country have done. - It could tap both outside and local funding sources. - The center would be established and operated with the understanding that museums create continuing jobs and local services that contribute to our economy. A visual arts center such as I have described belongs in our downtown area to reinforce the concept of the city center as the source for all the arts. It is a big idea, but it's worth the community's consideration now. I have become convinced that the impetus for a visual arts center must come from the citizens of Eugene along with the city of Eugene and its Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Activities. We have recently celebrated the 20th anniversary of the Hult Center for the Performing Arts The Hult Center for the Performing Arts is a performing arts facility in Eugene, Oregon, opened in 1982. 27 architectural firms competed for the opportunity to design the Center, but in the end the Eugene City Council awarded the contract to the New York firm of Hardy . We are all aware of the artistic and commercial benefits this building has brought our community. It is time to start planning for the Eugene visual arts center.
