The grant, which was awarded last Friday at a Domestic Violence Awareness Proclamation An act that formally declares to the general public that the government has acted in a particular way. A written or printed document issued by a superior government executive, such as the president or governor, which sets out such a declaration by the government.  hosted by the Oahu Domestic Violence Task Force, is part of Verizon Wireless' HopeLine(SM) program, an ongoing nationwide initiative that supports efforts of agencies to aid victims in rebuilding their lives.

As a result of HopeLine, and the company's predecessor phone recycling recycling, the process of recovering and reusing waste products—from household use, manufacturing, agriculture, and business—and thereby reducing their burden on the environment.  programs, Verizon Wireless has collected more than 500,000 used wireless phones to benefit domestic violence victims and advocacy groups since 1995. Today, Verizon Wireless stores throughout the country, including the company's Oahu, Maui, Kauai and Big Island retail locations, welcome donations of no longer used wireless phones, year-round.

Verizon Wireless refurbishes, recycles and/or sells collected phones for parts, using the proceeds to provide grants and phones to domestic violence shelters to aid victims. The company also donates voice mailboxes to shelters so women have a discreet way to receive messages from potential landlords, employers and family members.

The Hawaii State Coalition Against Domestic Violence will use Verizon Wireless' HopeLine grant to develop promotional materials aimed at increasing community awareness about domestic violence throughout the Hawaiian Islands. The program materials will be distributed by domestic violence service provider agencies in their communities, as a part of the Coalition's Domestic Violence Prevention and Education Campaign.

"Verizon Wireless recognizes the importance of helping to support organizations that serve victims of family violence," said Mark Yamauchi, director of business sales for Verizon Wireless -- Hawaii. "That is why we are pleased to recognize the leadership of the Hawaii State Coalition Against Domestic Violence and award a $5,500 HopeLine grant to the Coalition to expand the impact of their programs."

Verizon Wireless encourages customers who are upgrading their wireless phones, or changing carriers, to participate in its exclusive HopeLine phone-recycling program.
