What: Verizon Wireless is operating a cell site repeater to
enhance coverage at the base camp for crews battling the
Zaca Creek Fire in the San Rafael Wilderness area. The
installation was complete within 24 hours of a call from

Why: Verizon Wireless maintains a fleet of generators, mobile
cells on wheels (COWs), cells on light trucks (COLTs)
and repeaters to assist during emergencies by either
enhancing existing coverage or establishing a wireless
network where none had previously been operating. When
linked to the company's network the COWs, COLTs and
repeaters can handle thousands of wireless calls per
hour and create a wireless network spanning miles of
              burning acreage.

Network

dollars in its wireless network in California over the
              past six years.

Reliability: In addition to its fleet of mobile equipment, Verizon
Wireless' nationwide network reliability is supported by
              industry-leading redundancy and maintenance measures.
This has proven particularly valuable during natural
              disasters and other emergencies.

              Standard Verizon Wireless network-reliability features
include battery back-up power at all facilities as well
as generators installed at all switching facilities and
              many cell site locations.
