ACTIVITY: The Williamses avoid dreamstealers--those who get in the way of goals. They build "dream teams" instead! Have kids think of people who care about them and write about each person's role on their own dream team.

2 Why School Is Cool

LIFE SKILL: Valuing education

ACTIVITY: Give kids the chance to show off school smarts by setting up a pen-pal program with a group of younger students. Your experts can e-mail pen pals Pen Pals or penpals may refer to:
  • "Pen Pals" (TNG episode), a second season episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation first broadcast on May 1, 1989
  • Penpals, people who regularly write to each other
  • Penpals (band), a band from Japan
 with different tips each week, such as ways to manage homework.

3 Respect Yourself

LIFE SKILL: Dealing with frustration

ACTIVITY: The tennis stars say that sometimes it's best to walk away from confrontation. Have students write about their own confrontations on shoe-shaped pieces of paper. Post shoes under the heading, "It's Better to Walk Away."

4 Hang With an Incredible Crew

LIFE SKILL: Choosing friends; working with peers

ACTIVITY: Venus and Serena relate friendship to tennis: "It's about the back and forth." Ask students to write new analogies such as, "Friendship is like a pair of jeans. It's always comfortable." Then have them share their ideas.

5 Be True--"Do You"

LIFE SKILL: Staying in touch with one's self

LIFE SKILL: Saving for the future

ACTIVITY: Challenge students to identify investment options by pretending they have $1,000 to save and researching their choices online. Have kids explain their decisions.

9 Step Back, Setbacks!

LIFE SKILL: Coping with setbacks

ACTIVITY: First, give groups of students scenarios such as doing poorly on a test or forgetting an assignment. Then have kids create action plans to deal with these setbacks.
