But the gated community didn't furnish him with safety, and when he was attacked by three men, he had to fend for Verb 1. fend for - argue or speak in defense of; "She supported the motion to strike" defend, support argue, reason - present reasons and arguments himself. About 2 p.m., Mark Beckwith arrived at the Cross Keys shopping center, where his bank is located, and he was attacked by the men, who had gotten out of a white car. The three men began beating Beckwith, but he fought back. During the struggle, Beckwith managed to escape the clutches of his attackers long enough to get back to his car and retrieve his pistol. He then opened fire on the attackers, killing one of the men, Keith Love, and wounding at least one other. The two remaining attackers fled in their vehicle, which was driven by a get-away driver. The getaway car was found abandoned shortly after the incident. The wounded attacker, Corey Mcleaurin, was arrested after being treated for his wound. Police have indicated that Beckwith will not likely face charges because he had a permit for his gun. In Maryland, people can obtain a concealed carry permit if they transport cash or valuables, can verify that they may be in danger, or are in the public eye. |
