Vegetarian list finds Eugene's fare tasty.

Byline: Lewis Taylor The Register-Guard

Eugene may not boast a vegan vegan /veg·an/ (ve´gan) (vej´an) a vegetarian whose diet excludes all food of animal origin.

Portland finished first in the ranking for large cities.

"Eugene is very friendly to vegetarians," said Sandie Boggs, a vegan who has lived in Eugene for 46 years. "I hope there continue to be more and more options because people like to eat out."

Isaiah Boise, an employee at the Pizza Research Institute, was not surprised to hear that Eugene scored high in the rankings.

"(Eugene) seems like a healthy city," said Boise, whose family owns the vegetarian-friendly pizzeria. "It seems much healthier than most."

In addition to Pizza Research, which offers two vegan pies made with no animal products and sometimes tops its pizzas with whole cobs of corn, Cozmic Pizza and Sam Bond's Garage were mentioned by name for their pizzas in the nationwide survey.

The ranking was done by the Virginia-based animal rights group People for Ethical Treatment of Animals.

Along with vegetarian restaurants, the ranking looked at nonvegetarian restaurants with vegetarian options as well as available vegetarian and vegan products and retailers. Eugene scored high in all categories, PETA Quadrillion (10 to the 15th power). See space/time.  spokeswoman Reannon Peterson said. The ranking was based on testimonials posted on the PETA vegetarian Web site, GoVeg.com, along with the personal experiences of traveling PETA staff members.

Other Eugene eateries mentioned in the survey included the Lotus Garden, which offers vegetarian Asian fare, the college student favorite the Holy Cow Holy cow or sacred cow may refer to:

"I think it's a great honor, and I think it's well deserved," said Laughing Planet manager/co-owner Steve Mertz.

He believes there's even more room for Eugene to expand its vegetarian food offerings.

As for what would push Eugene into the No. 1 spot, Peterson suggested a vegan snack food place such as Portland's Voodoo Donuts.
