Vasomedical Expands EECP Education To Clinicians Specializing In Diabetes; EECP Therapy Is Being Presented For The First Time At Two International Scientific Sessions This Summer.

Vasomedical, Inc. (Nasdaq: VASO) announced today that EECP(R) therapy is being presented to diabetes specialists at two international venues this Summer: the 60th Scientific Sessions of the American Diabetes Association (ADA), scheduled for June 9-13 in San Antonio, and the 82nd annual meeting of The Endocrine Society (ENDO 2000), scheduled for June 21-24 in Toronto.

Vasomedical is exhibiting for the first time at the ADA, where EECP therapy is being presented to the approximately 7,500 attending diabetes researchers, physicians, and scientists as safe, effective treatment for angina in diabetic patients. Approximately 46% of EECP therapy patients have a history of diabetes and Type 2 diabetes is a predictor of cardiovascular disease, affecting more than 14 million patients in the United States alone.

Accepted for presentation at ENDO 2000 is, "Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and atrial natriuretic peptide (pro-ANP) in enhanced external counterpulsation", to be presented by Drs. S. Kho and H.E. Carlson of the State University of New York at Stony Brook. The study measures changes in blood levels of a specific growth factor and peptide in response to EECP therapy. Though not conclusive, the authors suggest that changes in the level of these factors may be one of the mechanisms of action to explain the positive clinical benefits seen in patients who have undergone enhanced external counterpulsation therapy. These include the reduction or elimination of angina symptoms through increased coronary perfusion and enhanced development of collateral circulation in both diabetic and non-diabetic patients.
