WESTBURY, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 12, 2000

Vasomedical, Inc. (Nasdaq: VASO) announced today that EECP EECP® Enhanced external counterpulsation, see there (R) therapy is being presented to diabetes specialists at two international venues this Summer: the 60th Scientific Sessions of the American Diabetes Association The American Diabetes Association, or the ADA, is an American health organization providing diabetes research, information and advocacy. Founded in 1940, the American Diabetes Association conducts programs in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, reaching hundreds of  (ADA Ada, city, United States

), scheduled for June 9-13 in San Antonio, and the 82nd annual meeting of The Endocrine Society (ENDO ENDO Endometriosis  2000), scheduled for June 21-24 in Toronto.

Vasomedical is exhibiting for the first time at the ADA, where EECP therapy is being presented to the approximately 7,500 attending diabetes researchers, physicians, and scientists as safe, effective treatment for angina in diabetic patients. Approximately 46% of EECP therapy patients have a history of diabetes and Type 2 diabetes type 2 diabetes

Accepted for presentation at ENDO 2000 is, "Vascular endothelial growth factor Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is an important signaling protein involved in both vasculogenesis (the de novo formation of the embryonic circulatory system) and angiogenesis (the growth of blood vessels from pre-existing vasculature).  (VEGF VEGF vascular endothelial growth factor. ) and atrial natriuretic peptide Atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP), atrial natriuretic factor (ANF), or atriopeptin, is a polypeptide hormone involved in the homeostatic control of body water, sodium, and adiposity.  (pro-ANP) in enhanced external counterpulsation enhanced external counterpulsation Cardiology A nonsurgical treatment of angina pectoris and CAD which ↑ blood flow to the heart by compressing blood vessels in the lower extremities. Carlson of the State University of New York (body) State University of New York - (SUNY) The public university system of New York State, USA, with campuses throughout the state.  at Stony Brook. The study measures changes in blood levels of a specific growth factor and peptide in response to EECP therapy. Though not conclusive, the authors suggest that changes in the level of these factors may be one of the mechanisms of action to explain the positive clinical benefits seen in patients who have undergone enhanced external counterpulsation therapy. These include the reduction or elimination of angina symptoms through increased coronary perfusion and enhanced development of collateral circulation in both diabetic and non-diabetic patients.

Speaking about Vasomedical's presence at this year's ADA, Doug Goldman, Vice President of Marketing and Business Development commented, "It's been well documented that patients with Type 2 (non-insulin dependent) diabetes are at increased risk for developing coronary artery disease coronary artery disease, condition that results when the coronary arteries are narrowed or occluded, most commonly by atherosclerotic deposits of fibrous and fatty tissue. . We are starting to see increased evidence of the effectiveness of EECP therapy in addressing the symptoms of coronary artery disease earlier in the progression of the disease across a broad spectrum of patients, rather than as a no-options treatment limited to patients in the later stages of the disease."

The American Diabetes Association, with a membership of 20,000, is the nation's leading nonprofit health organization providing diabetes research, information and advocacy for diabetes patients. Founded in 1940, the ADA conducts programs in all 50 states.

The Endocrine Society membership of 9,000 includes diabetes specialists, internal medicine physicians, and endocrinologists; about 6,000 are expected to attend ENDO 2000.
