) substantially strengthened its position today as an important supplier of instrument solutions for drug discovery and manufacture with the introduction of three systems used for purifying active ingredient pharmaceutical compounds and bio-molecules.

Called preparative chromatography systems, the solutions unveiled today are used in three different drug discovery and manufacturing steps: rapid or "flash" purification of experimental compounds during laboratory research; recovery of compounds in sufficient quantities for drug testing and clinical trials; and the high-volume purification of small organic molecules and bio-molecules for pharmaceutical manufacture.

Varian, Inc. is now the only single-source supplier of systems for all steps in the preparative chromatography process, all of which are based on the same control software platform. Because Varian, Inc.'s integrated offerings make scale-up from the laboratory bench to production a seamless and predictable process, they can help pharmaceutical and biotechnology firms speed new products to market.

These products stem from Varian, Inc.'s October 2000 acquisition of the SepTech(r) preparative liquid chromatography product line and technology from R&S Technology (Wakefield, R.I.). The preparative chromatography line complements the company's existing line of analytical chromatography instrumentation and supplies -- all used by the pharmaceutical industry for compound identification, quality assurance and product production.

of Varian, Inc.'s strategy is supplying pharmaceutical and life science customers with instrument innovations that provide unique solutions to their challenges for speed, sensitivity, and more detailed data," said Allen J. Lauer Allen J. Lauer is the Chairman of Varian, Inc., an $843 million dollar company specializing in scientific instruments and vacuum technologies. He has also served as the Chief Executive Officer and President of Varian, Inc. from 1999 to 2003. , Varian, Inc. president and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. "Key to this strategy is making selective acquisitions like the SepTech(r) product line which in less than six months are already expanding Varian, Inc.'s presence in the high-growth preparative chromatography segment, which we believe to be approximately $400 million in size," continued Lauer.

Preparative chromatography products introduced by Varian, Inc. today:
-- The Chroma..Zone(tm) High Throughput Zonal Purification (HTZP)(tm) system, a
flash chromatography technique that is a simple and safe solution for rapidly
purifying organic compounds used in the laboratory research and pilot stages of
drug discovery.

-- The SD-2 Prep HPLC system is a bench-top preparative HPLC solution helping
laboratories purify pharmaceutical drug active ingredients for testing and
clinical trials prior to full-scale production.

-- The ST8000C Bio-Skid LC system, a complete preparative chromatography
solution for purifying production volumes of bio molecules and active
ingredient drug compounds used in pharmaceutical manufacturing.
