Van Cliburn Competition for Amateurs. (Competitions).


The third International Piano Competition for Outstanding Amateurs will be conducted June 3-8, 2002, at Ed Landreth Auditorium on the campus of Texas Christian University Texas Christian University, at Fort Worth; Christian Church (Disciples of Christ); coeducational; opened 1873 at Thorp Spring, chartered 1874 as Add Ran Male and Female College. It assumed its present name in 1902 and moved to Fort Worth in 1910. It has faculties of arts and sciences, divinity, education, nursing, business, and fine arts and communications. Jarvis Christian College (est. 1912; predominantly African American) is affiliated. in Fort Worth, Texas. The application deadline is March 1, 2002, with notification of acceptance by April 1.

Entry is limited to a maximum of seventy-five participants, who must be at least thirty-five years old by June 3, 2002. Applicants may not derive their principal source of income from either public piano performances or piano instruction.

The preliminary round will consist of individual recital programs not to exceed twelve minutes each. Up to eighteen pianists will advance to the semifinal round, where each will present a program of no more than twenty minutes. From this group, six finalists will be chosen to perform up to a thirty-minute program. Competitors are free to choose their own repertoire for each phase of the competition; however, no work may be repeated in subsequent rounds. Works do not have to be memorized.

First Prize is a $2,000 cash award and two tickets to the Twelfth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. Numerous additional prizes will include a Press Jury Award, Audience Award and special awards 4n various repertory categories.
