Van Cliburn Amateur Competition.The Van Cliburn Foundation will hold its fifth International Piano Competition for Outstanding Amateurs (IPCOA) May 28-June 3, 2007, in Fort Worth Fort Worth, city (1990 pop. 447,619), seat of Tarrant co., N Tex., on the Trinity River 30 mi (48 km) W of Dallas; settled 1843, inc. 1873. An army post was established on the site in 1847, and after the Civil War became an Old West cow town. The first railroad (completed 1876) helped establish Fort Worth as a meatpacking and cattle-shipping point, and it soon also became a center for milling and shipping wheat., Texas. Applicants must be a minimum age of 35 years as of May 28, 2007, and may not derive their principal source of income from public piano performances or piano instruction. The jury for the IPCOA will be chaired by John Giordano, chairman of the jury for the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition and former music director of the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra. Other members will include distinguished music faculty from local universities, as well as music critics and other notable industry professionals.
