Van Cliburn Amateur Competition.The Van Cliburn Van Cliburn (b. Harvey Lavan Cliburn Jr., July 12, 1934), is an American pianist who achieved worldwide recognition in 1958, when at age 23, he won the first quadrennial International Tchaikovsky Piano Competition in Moscow, at the height of the Cold War. Foundation will hold its fifth International Piano Competition for Outstanding Amateurs (IPCOA IPCOA International Piano Competition for Outstanding Amateurs ) May 28-June 3, 2007, in Fort Worth, Texas Fort Worth is the fifth-largest city in the state of Texas, 18th-largest city in the United States[1], and voted one of "America’s Most Livable Communities. . Applicants must be a minimum age of 35 years as of May 28, 2007, and may not derive their principal source of income from public piano performances or piano instruction. The jury for the IPCOA will be chaired by John Giordano, chairman of the jury for the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition The Van Cliburn International Piano Competition was first held in 1962 in Fort Worth, Texas. This was created by Fort Worth area teachers in honor of Van Cliburn, who had won the first International Tchaikovsky Competition four years prior with Tchaikovsky's First Piano Concerto. and former music director of the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra. Other members will include distinguished music faculty from local universities, as well as music critics and other notable industry professionals.
