Valere Power Debuts Line Power System for ``Triple-Play'' and Wireless Networks.

RICHARDSON, Texas Richardson is a suburb in Dallas County and Collin County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 91,803, while according to a 2006 estimate, the population had grown to 99,200.  -- Valere Power today announced the Line Power Solutions family, a complete telecommunications power system for extending battery backed-up power from a centralized source to remote cabinet locations for "triple-play" voice, video and data service offerings or wireless access points.

Line power systems send power from a central office (CO), where batteries or generators provide backup in the event of a power outage Noun 1. power outage - equipment failure resulting when the supply of power fails; "the ice storm caused a power outage"

, across unused copper telephone lines to a remote fiber-optic or wireless network cabinet where space limitations and maintenance costs make it hard to locate power equipment and batteries. These systems reduce deployment costs by reusing existing network cabling and by removing the need for AC utility service and batteries in each remote node A terminal or computer located apart from the main network. It may refer to a branch office or a traveling user with a laptop. Access to the company LAN is typically made via an Internet or dial-up connection. See remote control software. .

Unique Scalability

Valere's Line Power Solutions family includes both head-end source and far-end conversion products. They are unique in the industry for their ability to scale from two to 40 inputs in a shelf to more than 400 inputs in a rack. Thus, they are cost effective for small optical network unit (ONU ONU Organisation des Nations Unies (French: United Nations)

) installations that need only 50 watts all the way to dozens of large fiber-to-the-node (FTTN (Fiber To The Neighborhood or Fiber To The Node) See FTTC. ) cabinets needing thousands of watts.

"Triple-play services and IP-based television is one of the biggest changes in the telecom network in our generation. Through its technology breakthroughs and unique features, Valere's line-power products are a key enabler of this revolution change," said Greg Fasullo, Valere Power co-founder and Vice President of Sales and Marketing. "The addition of the Line Power Solutions family means Valere now has a product offering for wireless and wire line networks that stretches from the CO to powered remote terminals and now to line-powered installations."

System Components

Valere's line-power solution is composed of a Head End Converter for use at the CO or remote terminals and a Far End Converter for remote locations. Both products are based on patented Valere technology that offers greater than 90% power conversion efficiency, reducing the thermal load on outside-plant enclosures and at the same time decreasing the amount of incoming energy needed.

The Head End Converter is a 2RU-high power shelf that can provide protected DC power for up to 40 remote nodes. Multiple shelves may be combined for larger installations. The Head End Converter power output can be configured for either -190 Vdc, +/- 190 Vdc, or +/-130 Vdc networks. It also has been designed to work in temperatures ranging from -40 to +75C, giving it the hardening needed for the extreme temperature conditions of a remote terminal.

It also comes with options for network monitoring The term network monitoring describes the use of a system that constantly monitors a computer network for slow or failing systems and that notifies the network administrator in case of outages via email, pager or other alarms.  via simple contact closures or full TCP/IP TCP/IP

Standard Internet communications protocols that allow digital computers to communicate over long distances.
monitoring over SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) A widely used network monitoring and control protocol. Data are passed from SNMP agents, which are hardware and/or software processes reporting activity in each network device (hub, router, bridge, etc. . It can also be monitored via standard Valere controllers and seamlessly integrated with the Compact, Integrated, or Modular system during customer deployment.

Valere's Far End Converter is a modular 1RU system that is deployed in the remote cabinet. The Far End Converter receives high-voltage power from the Head-End Converter and provides -48 V power to the remote equipment. The Far End Converter accepts up to 10 converter modules per shelf, each with two 50-watt DC-DC DC-DC Direct Current to Direct Current (power conversion)  converters.

The converter modules are hot swappable See hot swap.  and the system can span from 50 watts to 1000 watts of output power in the same compact package.

The Power Line Solutions complements Valere's full line of AC-DC products, which provide a solution for remote terminals that prefer to locate the power equipment in the cabinet. Valere offers the Mini DC Power System, the Compact DC Power System and the Integrated DC Power System for remote terminal use, all of which are based on Valere's high-efficiency power conversion technology.

Price and Availability

Both the Head End and Far End Converter systems are available in limited quantities in January 2005 and in production quantities in 1Q05. Prices range from $200 for an entry-level far end system to $1,000 for an entry-level head end system.
