VULCAN CHEMICALS PURCHASES OLIN CORPORATION'S SODIUM CHLORITE BUSINESS
AND ANNOUNCES PLANS TO BUILD NEW SODIUM CHLORITE FACILITY
BIRMINGHAM, Ala., June 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Vulcan Chemicals announced today that it has concluded agreements with the Olin Corporation (NYSE: OLN) for the purchase of certain assets of Olin's sodium chlorite business.
Vulcan also announced its plans to build a new sodium chlorite production facility, with a capacity of 18 million pounds per year, at its Wichita, Kan., chemical manufacturing complex.
Sodium chlorite is a water disinfection and purification chemical with strong positions in both municipal and industrial markets. In addition to its use in drinking water purification, it is also used as an industrial bleaching agent in a number of industries, in cleaning applications for the electronics industry, as a biocide in the fruit processing industry, and in various applications in the oil industry. Demand for the product is strong and is expected to continue to strengthen in a number of its end-use markets, according to industry analysts.
"Entry into the sodium chlorite business represents an important profitable growth opportunity for Vulcan consistent with Vulcan's intention to increase its service to the water treatment industry," said Vulcan Chemicals President Mike Ferris.
Vulcan will market all sodium chlorite produced by Olin's Niagara Falls, N.Y., production facility while a new sodium chlorite manufacturing facility is being constructed at Vulcan's Wichita, Kans., chlor-alkali complex. The sale does not include acquisition of Olin's Niagara Falls manufacturing site. Olin will cease operations at its Niagara Falls sodium chlorite plant upon start-up of the Vulcan facility, which is scheduled for the spring of 1994.
Sodium chlorite is produced from chlorine dioxide. Construction of the sodium chlorite facility will include an integrated chlorine dioxide system that uses the latest in competitive and environmentally efficient technology. Vulcan is currently marketing similar chlorine dioxide systems to the pulp and paper industry for paper bleaching operations.
Olin Corporation is concentrated primarily in chemicals, materials and metals, defense, sporting ammunition, and aerospace. The company is headquartered in Stamford, Conn., and employs 14,400 people in the United States and abroad.
Vulcan Chemicals, a division of Vulcan Materials Company (NYSE: VMC), is headquartered in Birmingham, Ala., and has chemical production facilities in Geismar, La., and Port Edwards, Wis., as well as Wichita. Vulcan is the nation's largest producer of construction aggregates, and is a leading manufacturer of a wide range of industrial chemicals.
