VST Demonstrates New USB Hard Drives and FireWire RAID Array at Apple Expo '99 in Paris.

VST Technologies, Inc., this week demonstrated a new FireWire(R) RAID Array and two new USB Hard Drives for the iBook and other USB-equipped Apple Macintosh(R) computers.

Debuting at Apple Expo `99, the USB Hard Drives are the smallest, lightest and most portable on the market, measuring only 3"x 5.6" x .68". These drives are available in 4 or 6 gigabyte (GB) sizes and match the iBook colors of Tangerine and Blueberry, as well as Black for the PowerBook(R) G3 and the new Power Macintosh(R) G4. The USB Hard Drives are based on a rugged, proven 2.5 inch portable drive mechanism with a non-operating shock specification of 500Gs and features hot-plug and unplug support.

Also demonstrated this week at Apple Expo '99 is VST's FireRAID Array, which includes custom hardware and software that allow multiple FireWire Hard Drives to be used together as a high-performance RAID Array by providing simultaneous striping, mirroring and HFS volumes. Like the VST FireWire Hard Drives, the smallest and most compact in the world, FireRAID is designed to be very small and compact, measuring less than 5" W x 7" D x 9" H. FireRAID is portable and includes a built-in Li-Ion battery to supply backup power for up to an hour in the event of AC power loss.

The VST FireRAID Array Tower houses up to four VST FireWire Hard Drives in any size or capacity ranging from 2GB to 14GB each. All existing VST FireWire Hard Drives may be used with FireRAID. The tower provides all FireWire connections to each drive which may be hot-plugged into any available array slot. In addition, the tower provides un-interruptible power, with built-in Li-Iion battery backup, and may be powered from any AC power source worldwide.

FireRAID Array Towers may be connected together to form larger arrays (up to 16 drives are supported). Data throughput is expected to range from 25 to 40MB/sec (megabytes per second), depending on the particular mechanisms used. FireRAID is based on SoftRAID from SoftRAID, LLC. SoftRAID has been shipped on every Apple MacOS Server since 1994 and is recognized as the fastest, most reliable software-based RAID solution available to Macintosh users.
