When she became the first woman appointed conductor of a major American symphony in Baltimore, it wasn't wise for many of that orchestra's musicians to object. But it was understandable, as the Baltimore Symphony has had no previous experience in the gender war.

If questions about Alsop persist, smart bettors will ignore the gender odds and go with the experienced one.
