Though small in size, they can generate 13-times more pollution per hour than a brand-new car. The culprit: gas-powered lawn mowers. Local air pollution officials are targeting these mechanical menaces by offering local residents $100 discounts toward cordless electric lawn mowers. ``It's the first time we've done this,'' said Deborah Weinstock, a spokeswoman for the Ventura County Air Pollution Control District. ``By replacing these gas-powered mowers, we'll reduce air pollution.'' If the program succeeds in eliminating 700 gas-powered mowers, officials estimate that will reduce about one ton of smog-producing pollutants from the skies every year.
