After hearing Tuesday from more than a dozen people, Ventura County supervisors postponed for two weeks a decision on a living-wage ordinance A law, statute, or regulation enacted by a Municipal Corporation.

An ordinance is a law passed by a municipal government. A municipality, such as a city, town, village, or borough, is a political subdivision of a state within which a municipal corporation has been

``You brought us here; you did this,'' Marcos Varga, co-chair of the coalition, told the supervisors. ``Now we want action. We urge you to vote for a living wage.''

Supervisors delayed their decision to give members of Ventura County's chambers of commerce the opportunity to comment. Chamber members were out of town at a conference and could not attend Tuesday's meeting.

Last year, the board voted in favor of the concept of a living-wage ordinance and asked county staff members to prepare a cost analysis.

The report found that more than 130 county employees, but only a handful of outside workers, would benefit from the ordinance, which would cost $824,000 a year in contracting costs, $342,000 in county workers' salaries and $45,000 in administrative expenses.

``I believe this is a budget decision,'' said Supervisor Judy Mikels. ``We don't have an extra whatever amount of money. This board has an obligation to understand the impact and know exactly where the money's going to come from.''
