VOLVO CLOSES 1993 WITH RECORD DECEMBER SALES

ROCKLEIGH, N.J., Jan. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Retail sales of 5,953 established a new December sales record for Volvo, bettering last December's 5,591 by 6.5%. Volvo's sales for calendar year 1993 totaled 72,247, up 7.2% from last year's 67,420. This is Volvo's third successive year of sales increases. Mats Ola Palm, president and CEO of Volvo Cars of North America, Inc., attributed a significant portion of the company's success to Volvo's new 850 car line.
"Volvos have always appealed to people who were interested in safety and durability," Palm explained. "The 850 has increased our appeal among people who enjoy cars that are also fun to drive."
The sporty 850 Series was introduced in the U.S. in October of 1992. The car received excellent reviews from the press, won numerous awards, and quickly grew in sales volume. For 1993, sales of the 850 grew to approximately 30,000 or nearly 40% of the total sales.
While 1993 saw the passing of Volvo's classic 240 sedans and wagons, Volvo filled that position in its product line with a version of the modern 940 priced at an affordable $22,900. Like every other new Volvo for '94, it is equipped with driver and passenger side air bags, anti-lock braking system, Side Impact Protection System, and CFC-free air conditioning. The entry level 940 has been an immediate sales success since its introduction this fall.
"We are quite optimistic about 1994 at Volvo," explained Palm. "We have the broadest and most exciting product line in our history. And, Volvo's practical appeal and rational pricing are very consistent with the values of today's families."
