Much of the work was concentrated on a steep, chaparral-covered 2.5-mile stretch of the Backbone Trail in upper Solstice Canyon above Malibu, where 45 people toiled. Among them was Diane Hirshberg, who figured it would be nice to give something back to the trails she hikes so often. ``It's sort of my way of surviving in L.A.,'' said Hirshberg, 32, of West Los Angeles

All but six miles of the trail is publicly owned, and the nonprofit Mountains Conservancy Foundation is starting a fund-raising drive to collect $4.6 million to purchase the last link, said Executive Director Ruth Kilday. Kilday said the effort would tap individual, corporate and grant funding. ``This private effort is realizing that government is not able to put together funds,'' Kilday said. |
