VOLUNTEERS HIT TRAIL IN LABOR OF LOVE.

Byline: Marni McEntee Daily News Staff Writer

Dozens of people hit the hiking trails in the Santa Monica Mountains The Santa Monica Mountains are a low transverse range in southern California in the United States. Geography
They run for approximately 40 mi (64 km) east-west from the Hollywood Hills in Los Angeles to Point Mugu in Ventura County.
on Saturday, but this was no day in the park.

The volunteers came with work gloves and an ample supply of elbow grease to rehabilitate hiking and equestrian trails as part of National Trails Day.

Much of the work was concentrated on a steep, chaparral-covered 2.5-mile stretch of the Backbone Trail in upper Solstice Canyon above Malibu, where 45 people toiled.

Among them was Diane Hirshberg, who figured it would be nice to give something back to the trails she hikes so often.

``It's sort of my way of surviving in L.A.,'' said Hirshberg, 32, of West Los Angeles

The kids' sojourn was part of an after-school program called Mind Power, which helps youngsters by providing educational and professional tutoring, along with outdoor adventures, said co-director David Lemmel.

``We try to get them out to get them to learn by doing,'' Lemmel said. ``So, hopefully, they can work on the trail and through that take some ownership of it - they can have part of the park.''

All but six miles of the trail is publicly owned, and the nonprofit Mountains Conservancy Foundation is starting a fund-raising drive to collect $4.6 million to purchase the last link, said Executive Director Ruth Kilday.

Kilday said the effort would tap individual, corporate and grant funding.

``This private effort is realizing that government is not able to put together funds,'' Kilday said.
