Local residents Cezar and Lisa Obnial and Charles and Pat Willett joined volunteers from Los Angeles and a surgical team from Tennessee during a five-day Sister City Medical Mission in June. The group also broke ground on a proposed medical center that promises ongoing medical care for the city's more than 116,000 residents. Sariaya's needy, who rarely have access to doctors or medical services, patiently waited with umbrellas shielding infants, families and the elderly from blazing sun and intermittent rain showers. More medical volunteers and surgical staffers were assigned to the Memorial Medical hospital in Lucena City, about eight miles from Sariaya, performing 27 cleft palate cleft palate, incomplete fusion of bones of the palate. As an honorary guest speaker, he also received accolades from Sariaya officials for a donation of youth sports equipment Santa Clarita sent to Sariaya earlier this year to support youth programs in its sister city. The groundbreaking ceremony included installation of a time capsule documenting the sister city relationship between Santa Clarita and Sariaya and the plans for the medical center. A rendering of the proposed center by local architect Cezar Obnial was also unveiled at the ceremony. Although the city of Sariaya has more than 100,000 residents, it currently lacks a medical center to serve those residents who cannot afford a private doctor or hospital in nearby Lucena City. An additional $50,000 must now be raised to build the medical center.
