VOLUNTEERS GET HANDS DIRTY FIXING PARK TRAILS.

 hiked a mile into Towsley Canyon on Saturday to repair trails damaged by last winter's record rains.

``The beauty, to me, of trail work is that it's anonymous,'' Wendy Langhans, a Towsley Canyon Park spokeswoman, said after the morning event that drew about 80 people. ``The work you're doing is constantly undone by the weather and the elements, but that just means there's years of giving in a falling inwards; a collapse.

Towsley Canyon, located in Ed Davis Park, is part of the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy The Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy is an agency of the state of California in the United States founded in 1979 and dedicated to the acquisition of land in the Santa Susana and Santa Monica Mountains and the Simi Hills, north and west of Los Angeles, for preservation as open , an organization dedicated to the preservation and management of local open space, parkland, watershed lands, trails and wildlife habitats.

Volunteers Saturday included members of local Cub Scout and Boy Scout troops.

 as one heavy storm after another pounded the area last winter. Two culverts were installed to divert rainwater under trails.

At least a dozen wooden signs were added to the trails, as well, replacing signs that had been washed away by flooding and mudslides.

``When you have the youngsters coming out with the adults, you have parents modeling for them what it is to be a real human being,'' Langhans said. ``You may see dirt being moved - I see people being built.''

The Towsley Canyon event was one of at least a dozen held Saturday across California as part of National Trails Day, an annual celebration of trails organized by the American Hiking Society The creator of this article, or someone who has substantially contributed to it, may have a conflict of interest regarding its subject matter.
