 on Saturday created a fine recruiting opportunity for Many Mansions, which needs 100 volunteers for a coming fund-raiser.

About 60 people sweated out an all-day cleanup detail in and around the six specialty gardens, part of ongoing efforts to protect the 33-acre Dover Avenue tract and its more than 200 varieties of plants and flowers.

``People who would be involved with botanical gardens A botanical garden is a place where plants, especially ferns, conifers and flowering plants, are grown and displayed for the purposes of research, conservation, and education.  would also care about making their community better in other ways,'' said Lisa Safaeinili, resource development director for Many Mansions, a housing advocacy organization. ``It's an opportunity to recruit good people.''

Both Many Mansions and the Gregor Mendel Botanic Foundation, which maintains the gardens, rely solely on donations and grants to exist.

The foundation has about 100 volunteers that regularly clean and regrade Re`grade´

The gardens are open from dawn to dusk every day except July 4.

For Camarillo resident Ron Cuff, volunteering adds a dimension to his life.

``It keeps me engaged in the community and mankind in general,'' he said. ``There's something missing in your life if all you ever do are things for yourself.''

Many Mansions already has 50 volunteers who serve in its homework literacy program, assist in building renovation projects and oversee youth programs.
