VOLLEYBALL NOTEBOOK: WESTLAKE FINDS A GOOD MATCH.

Byline: Vincent Bonsignore Staff Writer

It's hard to determine who was more fortunate - the Westlake High boys' volleyball team for getting a quality coach like Doug Magorien at such a late date, or Magorien for inheriting such a good team.

Either way, things are working out quite nicely for Magorien and the talented Warriors, who are undefeated through six matches.

Magorien, the Westlake girls' coach, was tabbed to replace former boys' coach Greg Gibbons Famous people named Gibbons include:
  • Beth Gibbons (born 1965), British singer
  • Billy Gibbons, guitarist for ZZ Top
  • Cedric Gibbons (1893–1960), American art director
  • Christopher Gibbons (1615 - 1676), English composer, son of Orlando
when Gibbons resigned last month to take a job with the Pepperdine volleyball program.

Magorien, a long-time boys' coach at Taft of Woodland Hills, took over a team that advanced to the Southern Section Division I semifinals last year - losing to eventual champion Loyola of Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  - and returns talented setter Travis Foltz, 6-foot-4 outside hitter Matt Schneider, outside hitter Chris Dehner and impressive 6-6 junior Sam Cantor.

Despite Magorien's arrival just before the season started, Westlake hasn't missed a beat. The Warriors, who have a big win over talented Valencia, open a big Marmonte League The Marmonte League is a high school sports league primarily made up of schools from Ventura County. On Saturday they will travel to the prestigious Dos Pueblos Tournament.

--Another late addition: Westlake wasn't the only program that scrambled to find a coach just before the start of the season.

At Notre Dame Notre Dame IPA: [nɔtʁ dam] is French for Our Lady, referring to the Virgin Mary. In the United States of America, Notre Dame  of Sherman Oaks, Brandon Crips stepped down to take an assistant coaching job at USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code.  in February.

Fortunately, former Stanford University Stanford University, at Stanford, Calif.; coeducational; chartered 1885, opened 1891 as Leland Stanford Junior Univ. (still the legal name). The original campus was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted. David Starr Jordan was its first president.  player Tyler Neal was itching to get into coaching after recently graduating from law school.

After opening Mission League play with losses against powerhouse Loyola of Los Angeles, Harvard-Westlake of Studio City and Alemany of Mission Hills, Notre Dame (2-3, 0-3) hopes to rebound against Chaminade of West Hills (Tuesday) and St. Francis of La Canada (Thursday).

--Crespi starts hot: It will be a huge upset if anyone in the Mission League catches Loyola of Los Angeles, one of the top teams in the country - but right behind the Cubs an intriguing race for second place should develop.

Crespi of Encino (7-4, 3-1) has taken early steps behind outside hitter Pat Collins and setter Brandon Richard.
