VOLLEYBALL NOTEBOOK: HITTING MINUS HITTERS : HIGHLAND GOES WITHOUT STARS.

and Kisha Stevens, Highland High was expected to return to the pack in the Golden League volleyball race this year.

Still, Bulldogs coach Mike Bird was not counting on injuries to his key players as his Bulldogs prepare for tonight's league opener at home against title-contending Littlerock.

Bird is without his two senior co-captains, Betsy Bartholet and Amber Stevens

``Amber's got a pretty bad shoulder right now. She said she's going to try and play (tonight),'' said Bird, who didn't expect to have his best hitter available to contend with Littlerock's talented front line.

In the United States of America, Notre Dame  after a 3-0 start, performed admirably without their stars last weekend at the Whittier tournament. Highland placed fifth in the 45-team field.

``We did OK,'' Bird said. ``We had two bad games. We lost to Valencia after we had beaten them (last week).''

Stevens' injury left a big void, however. Bird said she was the team's most experienced and confident player who provided leadership.

``Trying to replace Amber at outside hitter was hard. That was our biggest weakness at the outside hitter spot,'' Bird said. ``I thought Keri Pulcifer did a pretty good job. But I need some hitters to step up. It's a question mark.''

Bird expects what has been an up-and-down Littlerock team - the Lobos went 2-3 in nonleague matches - to be at its best tonight when the contenders meet at Highland.

The Lobos could dominate at the net with senior outside hitter Teri Castrellon and junior middle blocker Jessica Ramos among the league's most powerful players.

``They have some girls that can just bang the ball,'' Bird said. ``Talent-wise, (Littlerock) is right there.''

Bird warns not to discount Palmdale, which was wiped out by graduation after finishing second to Highland last year but has talent, led by senior Summer Hoban.

could also make noise in what may be a down year in the Golden League based on September's performances.

``No one seemed to have a very good preseason. I think there's going to be a lot of long, close matches,'' said Bird, whose Bulldogs went 10-0 last season to secure a second consecutive league championship. ``I don't see anyone going undefeated this time.''
