VOLLEYBALL NOTEBOOK: GOLDEN FOES HELP GROWING PROGRAM DIFFICULT TESTS BENEFITING LITTLEROCK'S DEVELOPMENT.

Byline: Heather Gripp Staff Writer

Littlerock High dropped into a three-way tie for the Golden League girls' volleyball volleyball, outdoor or indoor ball and net game played on a level court. An upright net, 3 ft (or 1 m) high, the top of which stands 8 ft (2.43 m) from the ground for men, 7 ft 4 1/8 in (2.  lead Tuesday, falling to Quartz Hill for its first league loss. The crowd atop the standings shares Littlerock coach Rachel Behen's sentiment about the league's competitiveness, which she says has aided her young team's rapid development.

``I think every team has posed a different kind of challenge of the same level of difficulty,'' Behen said. ``Each team has different strengths.''

She describes Antelope Valley This article is about the Los Angeles County region. For the census-designated place in Wyoming, see Antelope Valley-Crestview, Wyoming.

team with good defense. Highland, also tied for first, has power hitters. Lancaster's success stems from great jumpers and its setter setter: see sporting dog.

Then there was Quartz Hill, the defending league champion, which beat Littlerock in three games. The Rebels, a young team like the Lobos, received 16 kills from Tara Henn and 36 assists from Kayla Cherland.

Although Littlerock's run through league competition hasn't been easy - Tuesday's match concluded the first round of Golden play - Behen called it a beneficial learning experience for a team that has three sophomores and two freshmen among nine players.

``Every single week we're preparing for a different type of game at the same high level of intensity,'' Behen said. ``It allows me to get to prepare them for different aspects of the game and become more complete. The most difficult part of it is we're always on our toes. We can never get through a match, then sit back and say, 'OK, now we can take a breather Verb 1. take a breather - take a short break from one's activities in order to relax

.' Every match is tough.''

The Lobos have been tough themselves, led by returning all-league middle blocker Samantha Bull and fellow seniors Crystal Schiavllo and Brittany Sosa.

Littlerock, Quartz Hill and Highland are 5-1 in league play.

--Perfect timing: Littlerock's preseason was filled with injuries, then players got sick as a cold made its way through the team.

``We've been healthy since about the second week of September,'' Behen said. ``We got all of it in the preseason. I was thankful. I said, 'Good, we got it out of the way.' ''
