COURTNEY SCHULTZ

Middle blocker, junior

Harvard-Westlake

It's the start of the third game, with Harvard-Westlake having already won the previous two, and while some of her teammates allow themselves a moment to smile or giggle, Courtney Schultz scowls.

It's that intensity, along with the enormous skill she has displayed since she first walked on the court, that makes Schultz stand out in an area rich in volleyball talent. Schultz dominated almost every opposing middle blocker she faced and led the Wolverines to their first state championship since 1995.

``She is a bona-fide Division I player, and she absolutely hates to lose,'' Harvard-Westlake coach Jess Quiroz said.

Schultz, who had 20 kills in the Wolverines' three-game victory over Los Gatos Los Gatos (lôs gä`tōs, lŏs, găt`əs), city (1990 pop. 27,357), Santa Clara co., W Calif.; inc. 1887. It is an affluent residential community and health resort.  in the Division III

state final, was named co-MVP of Division III.

FIRST TEAM

STEPHANIE CISNEROS

Outside hitter, Sr. Sylmar

Plenty of girls have power at the net, but Cisneros' ability to hit from the back row made her stand out. Coach Bob Thomson Robert 'Bob' Thomson was an English footballer who played during the early 20th century, mainly prior to World War I.

Playing as a forward, Thomson carved out a career in the game despite having only one eye, resulting from a childhood accident with a firework.
called her ``possibly the hardest hitter I've ever coached,'' and Cisneros also showed tremendous heart when she played with a leg injury in Sylmar's City Section championship match victory over Chatsworth.

ASHLIE HAIN

Outside hitter/setter, Sr. La Reina La Reina (Spanish: "The queen") is a commune of Chile located in Santiago Province, Santiago Metropolitan Region. It consistently ranks in the top five communes with the best quality of life in the Metropolitan Region.

The greatest girls' volleyball partnership in the area reached its zenith this fall, when La Reina came through with the school's first Southern Section championship. Jennifer Ryan put up the big kill numbers, but Hain is the team's MVP (Multimedia Video Processor) A high-speed DSP chip from Texas Instruments, introduced in 1994. Officially introduced as the TMS320C80, it combines RISC technology with the functionality of four DSPs on one chip.  because of her versatility and ability to spread the ball around as a setter setter: see sporting dog.

KARALYN KUCHENBECKER

Outside hitter, Jr. Harvard-Westlake

It's easy to get lost on a team that features a spectacular middle blocker such as Courtney Schultz, but Kuchenbecker is a star in her own right. A first-team All-Southern Section Division III selection, Kuchenbecker is a big reason why the Wolverines will be favored to win another section title next season.

TRACY NEUMEIER

Setter, Sr. La Canada

With the loss of their two top hitters from last season, the Spartans were expected to go through something of a rebuilding year, but Neumeier's setting and leadership allowed La Canada to return to the Division III-AA semifinals. Neumeier will play for the University of Utah The University of Utah (also The U or the U of U or the UU), located in Salt Lake City, is the flagship public research university in the state of Utah, and one of 10 institutions that make up the Utah System of Higher Education.  in the fall.

JENNIFER RYAN

Middle blocker, Sr. La Reina

Ryan, last year's Daily News Player of the Year and a three-time all-area selection, has done it all at the high school level and will now move on to Santa Clara Santa Clara, city, Cuba

University. She topped 1,000 career kills to become the school's all-time leader, and won the section title that had eluded her for three years.

Setter, Sr. Sylmar

A City Section team with a strong setter can overcome other deficiencies much easier, and the Spartans had one of the best in Smiley. She spread the ball among Nancy Ariza, Krystal Mejia and Stephanie Cisneros, and area coaches thought enough of Smiley to name her co-MVP of the City Section, along with Cisneros.

BIGGEST SURPRISES

1. Sylmar - The Spartans were expected to be strong, but from early on in the season, it was clear that Sylmar was the class of the City Section. The Spartans blasted Chatsworth in 51 minutes in an early-season nonleague game, and that confidence carried them through the rest of the season.

2. Village Christian - The small-school Crusaders returned all six starters and attained the top ranking in Division IV-A midway through the season, the first No. 1 ranking in school history. Led by hitter Maria Abaca, Village Christian reached the semifinals of the Southern Section playoffs.

3. Hart - With their third new coach in three years, the Years, The

Indians could have been excused for having a bad year. Instead, Hart dominated what appeared to be a balanced Foothill League, going 10-0 led by hitters Casey Boller, Jessica McDonald and Nicole Stuka and setter Tara Coe, all seniors. Coach Shannon Martin pulled the team together for a successful year.

A LOOK AHEAD

--Teams to watch: As always, Harvard-Westlake will be a strong contender for a Division III-AA section championship, and it doesn't appear the Wolverines will be touched in the Mission League. Royal and Westlake will battle once again in the Marmonte League The Marmonte League is a high school sports league primarily made up of schools from Ventura County. Don Hyatt has built the Regents into an area power, but La Reina loses a lot of firepower fire·pow·er

--Players to watch: Courtney Schultz and Karalyn Kuchenbecker will have their pick of Division I scholarship offers this summer. Chatsworth's duo of middle blocker Linda Wang and setter Carlie Allison will both be back, and because of them, the Chancellors will be strong contenders for a City Section title.

--Projected player of the year: Unless Schultz suffers an injury, or some superhuman su·per·hu·man

--Projected coach of the year: Quiroz is the obvious choice, but the Wolverines should do well next year as long as their core remains intact. If Hyatt can keep La Reina anywhere close to where they have been the past seven years, he deserves major kudos.

COACH OF THE YEAR

JESS QUIROZ

Harvard-Westlake

Quiroz coached the Wolverines to their first state title since 1995. Harvard-Westlake began the season by winning the Iolani tournament in Hawaii and ended with a strong postseason run in which it dropped just one game in eight matches. This is the second time he's won this award.

BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENTS

1. The Marmonte League - Some of the area's best volleyball usually comes out of Ventura County, but this was a down year for teams such as Royal and Westlake, which tied for the league title but didn't overwhelm o·ver·whelm

2. Highland - It's hard to call a team that went 10-0 in league a disappointment, but these Bulldogs seemed to have a good chance to become the first Golden League team to win two playoff play·off also play-off

for the past two or three years. The Sunset Six League is not as strong as other City leagues, and that lower level of competition hurts the Parrots when the playoffs begin. The biggest disappointment is that coach Jimmy Ikeda is leaving the school. He will be tough to replace.
