VOLLEYBALL BEAT.Byline: Vincent Bonsignore Staff Writer NOT IN FAVOR FAVOR Faces and Voices of Recovery (Washington, DC) Sylmar coach Bob Thomson Robert 'Bob' Thomson was an English footballer who played during the early 20th century, mainly prior to World War I. Playing as a forward, Thomson carved out a career in the game despite having only one eye, resulting from a childhood accident with a firework. isn't a big fan of the City Section's decision to begin postseason with one 32-team draw, then pare it down to two 16-team draws based on the results of tonight's first-round matches. First-round winners advance to the 16-team City Division while losing teams go to the Invitational in·vi·ta·tion·al adj. Restricted to invited participants: an invitational golf tournament. n. An event, especially a sports tournament, restricted to invited participants. Adj. 1. bracket In programming, brackets (the [ and ] characters) are used to enclose numbers and subscripts. For example, in the C statement int menustart [4] = ; the [4] indicates the number of elements in the array, and the contents are enclosed in curly braces. . ``I just liked it the way they've had it in the past,'' Thomson said. For a couple of reasons. Prior to this season, the playoffs were made up of a 16-team City Division and a 16-team Invitational, with the City comprised of the top 16 teams and Invitational consisting of teams 17 through 32. Under that scenario - and back when the section was divided into a 4-A and 3-A divisions - two teams were recognized as champions after winning four postseason matches. Now, the champion of the Invitational draw automatically begins the postseason with a loss. ``That doesn't sound right to me,'' Thomson said. In addition, Thompson would rather the money the City Section spends for the extra round of the playoffs go to something more useful. ``Give us an extra regular-season match or another scrimmage,'' Thomson said. ``Sometimes it's like the (L.A. Unified) school district talks out of both sides of their mouth. On one, they tell us they don't have enough money for certain things, but then they spend extra money to add another playoff play·off also play-off n. Sports 1. SOUTHERN SECTION PLAYOFFS The Southern Section announces its playoff brackets brackets: see punctuation. Sunday. First-round matches for all 32-team brackets begins Tuesday, and all 16-team brackets start next Thursday. IN CONTROL The objective is clear for Camarillo. Win tonight against Rio Mesa of Oxnard and the worst the Scorpions can do is finish tied for second place in the Pacific View League. There still remains an outside chance that there could be a three-way tie for first place - Pacifica of Oxnard must upset Oxnard tonight for it to happen - but Camarillo seems more focused on getting ready for the playoffs. ``Coming into the season, our goal was to win the league championship, but we let down a couple of times and lost a match we definitely could have won,'' Camarillo OH Ashley Schlimgen said. ``But we still felt good about what we've accomplished, and we feel good about how we're playing going into the playoffs.'' No matter what happens tonight, Schlimgen and the Scorpions could struggle in the Southern Section Div. I-A playoffs. Outside of Oxnard and Pacifica, the Pacific View League isn't the most competitive in volleyball volleyball, outdoor or indoor ball and net game played on a level court. An upright net, 3 ft (or 1 m) high, the top of which stands 8 ft (2.43 m) from the ground for men, 7 ft 4 1/8 in (2. . As a result, Camarillo might not be as prepared for the level of competition it will face in the postseason. In fact, the Scorpions would have preferred going into the playoffs coming off matches this week against Oxnard and Pacifica rather than Hueneme of Oxnard and Rio Mesa. ``Unfortunately, we don't get pushed on a consistent basis in our league, so it's difficult making the transition to the high level of play we'll see right off the bat,'' Camarillo coach Jeanne Nelson said. ``But we're going to do the best we can, and hopefully we can get off to a good start.'' Camarillo has struggled more against teams it should easily beat than against better clubs. ``We sometimes play down to our competition, but I think we've straightened that out,'' Schlimgen said. ``And, right now, we can't afford a slip up. To finish (first or second), we need to win (tonight) so we know what's at stake.'' ON THE OTHER HAND Verdugo Hills of Tujunga coach Will Reinhart is in favor of the new playoff system, and he makes a strong point. With so much controversy surrounding the final three or four seeds - and not much separating the teams fighting for those last few spots in the City division - what is wrong with those teams playing each other to determine who advances to the better bracket and who goes to the lower one? ``I like it because it gives teams a chance to play their way in,'' Reinhart said. ``Hey, win your match and move on. It's as easy as that.'' Verdugo Hills has some bitter history, too. Last year, the Dons were denied a chance to play in the City Division when it was seeded 19th after being downgraded for playing in the Sunset Six League, which was perceived as weak. They ended up winning the Invitational championship but would have welcomed a chance to play in the higher bracket. ``It would have been nice to have seen where we really fit in, based on what happened on the court,'' Reinhart said. ``Now most of the politics is taken out of the equation. It comes down to performance, and that's the way it should be.'' Verdugo Hills was seeded eighth this year after cruising to the Sunset Six League title with a 10-0 mark. The Dons open tonight at home against Bravo BRAVO Cardiology A clinical trial–Blockade of the GP IIB/IIIA Receptor to Avoid Vascular Occlusion– which evaluated lotrafiban in preventing strokes and acute MI. See GP IIB/IIIA. . Chatsworth, the West Valley League champion, was the highest seed from the region at No. 5. The second round will be played Monday. YEAR OF FIRSTS Montclair Prep of Panorama City can qualify for the playoffs for the first time in eight years with a home victory tonight over Pacific Hills of Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850. . It has been that kind of year for the Mounties, who won their first (Delphic) league game in six years. ``Then we went on to do it five more times,'' Montclair Prep coach Jeannine Smith said. ``Now we need one more. We have such a neat group of kids, they truly deserve this.'' Montclair Prep, which moved from the Alpha League to the Delphic this season, upset second-place Archer on Tuesday to position itself to wrap up third place with a victory tonight. The Mounties lost to Pacific Hills two weeks ago in five games, dropping the fifth 15-13. Pacific Hills would claim third place with a victory, based on head-to-head competition against Montclair Prep. ``Quite a bit is at stake,'' Smith said. ``But the girls are pumped up.'' Montclair Prep has received consistent contributions from Lexie Liebert, Kristen Sluber, Jessica Statland and Lisa Weintraub. SEVEN-DAY FORECAST --Match of the week: Quartz Hill already has won the Golden League title, but the Rebels have a big match tonight at 6 at second-place Palmdale.
