VOLLEYBALL BEAT.

Byline: Vincent Bonsignore Staff Writer

WILD AND CRAZY

Notre Dame Notre Dame IPA: [nɔtʁ dam] is French for Our Lady, referring to the Virgin Mary. In the United States of America, Notre Dame  of Sherman Oaks got a breather Tuesday in a surprisingly easy three-game victory over slumping Harvard-Westlake of Sherman Oaks.

For the Knights, it was a much-needed opportunity to catch their breath after last Thursday's wild five-game marathon victory over Louisville of Woodland Hills.

In that win, Notre Dame dropped the first two games before rallying to take in the next three in a dramatic Mission League victory. Coupled with Tuesday's victory, the Knights are tied for first place with Flintridge Sacred Heart The Sacred Heart is a religious devotion to Jesus' physical heart as the representation of the divine love for humanity

of La Canada. The teams square off for the first time next Thursday.

Should the match go five games, Notre Dame will be prepared. The Knights have three five-game victories this year, having gone the distance to beat Moorpark, La Reina La Reina (Spanish: "The queen") is a commune of Chile located in Santiago Province, Santiago Metropolitan Region. The key is focus.

``We've been in that situation before, and we talked a lot about maintaining intensity all throughout the third and fourth games,'' Notre Dame's Nikki Candella said. ``Of course, we want to have that intensity in the first two games, but for some reason, we (sometimes) start a little slower than we want. Fortunately, we know what we have to do to respond in those situations.''

Notre Dame came into the season with a star in outside hitter Merideth Rice and the steady Candella, who provides much-needed offense to balance Rice. In addition, role players like middle blocker Frances Garcia and setter setter: see sporting dog.

STILL TIME

Flintridge Prep of La Canada standout Lindsay Fletcher Fletcher may refer to one of the following: Ideas and companies

had a specific plan this year in the Prep League: Run the table, earn first-place honors and advance to the postseason with a high seed and a guaranteed home match in the first round.

After dropping two matches to Chadwick in the last five days, Fletcher and Flintridge Prep now have to adjust those goals and hope for the best.

``It's pretty disappointing, because first place is definitely what we are aiming for,'' Fletcher said after Tuesday's 25-23, 21-25, 19-25, 25-22, 15-12 loss to Chadwick. ``Now we have to hope somebody beats them, so we can climb back in.''

Tuesday's loss was especially disappointing for Flintridge Prep, because it was the home team and seemed to be in charge after winning games two and three. But Chadwick regrouped and earned narrow wins in the next two games.

ROLLING

Baptist over the past week. The victory over L.A. Baptist on Tuesday was especially big because the Knights figure to be the Spirits' main competition in the Olympic League.

``This was a huge win for us,'' Paraclete standout Angela Hupp said.

ROLLING PART II

, including a stirring five-game victory over second-place Newbury Park last month.

In Tuesday's victory, Moorpark again got strong performances from Kelly Hanson (10 kills, 11 digs), Danielle Hermansen (eight kills) and Lauren Hartnett (25 assists).

Another big challenge for Moorpark comes next Thursday, when it travels to Newbury Park for a match that likely will determine the Marmonte League champion.

Newbury Park, behind Brittany Collet's 48 assists, easily handled Thousand Oaks on Tuesday to remain one game behind Moorpark.

BIG DIFFERENCE

``Obviously, it's more than just one player,'' Rittenhouse said. ``But she's an important player. Also, we're a young team, so there are other factors.''

Still, Johnson is a key. Last week she sat out the first game against Royal - a loss - only to play the rest of the way in a 3-1 victory.
