VOLLEYBALL BEAT THE TEAM THAT HANGS TOGETHER WINS TOGETHER.

Byline: Vincent Bonsignore Staff Writer

Shortly into Taft of Woodland Hills' victory over Granada Hills last Wednesday a group of girls walked into Taft's gym and took seats together in the top row.

It was the entire Sylmar volleyball volleyball, outdoor or indoor ball and net game played on a level court.  wasn't the most important thing. It was that a whole group of girls would hang out together when they could all have been doing anything else.

Erika Lopez said. ``It's not unusual that we do a lot of stuff together.''

The Spartans are unusual in that 13 players are seniors.

In fact, this group has played together for three years, giving the Spartans more than enough time to bond together on and off the court.

``It makes a huge difference because there is a lot of trust between all of us,'' middle blocker Domonique Cisneros said. ``When things are going bad, there isn't any bickering bick·er

or hard feelings. ... No matter what happens we support each other.''

That kind of goodwill could be the difference in the Spartans' run to a City title, which they last won in 2000. Van Nuys, their chief rival in the Valley Mission league, has won the previous two titles after beating Sylmar during the regular season.

``The last three years the winner between us and Van Nuys have gone on to win the championship, so it's becoming quite a rivalry,'' Sylmar coach Bob Thompson said.

The two teams meet at Sylmar at 4 p.m. today.

``We definitely want to end their run, and as far as the City title, of course that's out goal,'' Lopez said. ``For us to end our careers together as the City champion, wow, that would be pretty awesome.''

SHE WILL RIDE A WAVE OF DESTINY

No disrespect to all the college programs that recruited 6-foot-3 Oaks Christian of Westlake Village outside hitter Julie Rubenstein - and there were plenty of them across the country - but there was little chance Rubenstein was going anywhere else but Pepperdine University Pepperdine University is a private institution of higher learning affiliated with the Church of Christ in unincorporated Los Angeles County, California, United States. The university's location overlooks the Pacific Ocean and is adjacent to the city limits of Malibu. .

Rubenstein, a 16-year old junior, recently announced she'd be heading to Malibu in 2005.

``I guess I've wanted to go to Pepperdine for as long as I can remember,'' Rubenstein said.

Rubenstein has been a fixture at Firestone Fieldhouse Firestone Fieldhouse is a multipurpose arena located in Malibu, California, a suburb of Los Angeles. ``I pretty much grew up there,'' Rubenstein said.

Now she'll be playing volleyball there - another inevitable development. Rubenstein has attended Pepperdine volleyball camps since she began playing a few years ago, and now that she's matured into a dynamic outside hitter prospect the Waves will soon reap the rewards for all those years of working with her.

``I can't wait,'' Rubenstein said. ``Even though I guess I have to for another year.''

CALL HER THE BAMBINO

Newbury Park setter Brittany Collette deserves some credit for all but predicting the Panthers would finally get key wins against Marmonte League The Marmonte League is a high school sports league primarily made up of schools from Ventura County. ``Even though we lost to both of them last year, we knew with a few adjustments and just a little more focus on the little things we'd be able to beat them,'' Collette said. ``But this is just a start, nothing else. We don't want to just beat them and then enjoy (those wins) for the rest of the year. We want to win the league championship and do well in the playoffs.''

With Collette emerging as one of the top setters in the region and Brynn Cameron one of the top outside hitters, Newbury Park has the type of attack that can keep up with any opponent. In addition, Christina Fick has kept opponents off balance with her serving.

``We're playing really well right now, but we have to keep it up,'' Collette said.

NICE REBOUND

Westlake was discouraged with the loss to Newbury Park, but the Warriors did an excellent job of bouncing back to take second place in the competitive Royal tournament Saturday.

``We learned a lot about ourselves in that loss to Newbury Park,'' Westlake setter Courtney Wade said. ``But we also learned a lot about ourselves by what we did (at the tournament.)''

The Warriors gutted out a full day of volleyball Saturday to reach the final against powerful Long Beach Poly. In the process, they beat Notre Dame Notre Dame IPA: [nɔtʁ dam] is French for Our Lady, referring to the Virgin Mary. In the United States of America, Notre Dame  of Sherman Oaks, which pulled off a big upset over Harvard-Westlake of Studio City on Tuesday.

The win over Notre Dame, and the way the Warriors played against Poly in a dramatic three-game loss, was exactly what they needed to get back on track after such a tough loss to Newbury Park.

``It was a big loss, but it was still just one loss,'' Wade said. ``Good teams lose matches, but it's how you react to a loss that sets you apart. I thought we did a great job of that.''

REALITY CHECK

Westlake coach Doug Magorien and Notre Dame coach Shannon Tuttle have a little history. Magorien coached Tuttle's little brother a few years ago in club ball.

Well, maybe it was a little more than a few years.

``When she told me that I was like, `Oh yeah, right, I remember that,' '' Magorien said. ``He's a great kid.''

Tuttle looked at Mogorien and smiled.

``He's not a kid anymore, coach. He's 31 years old now.''

Magorien winced.

``I was like, `Wow man, I'm getting old.' ''

SISTER ACT

For the second consecutive year, Littlerock has two sets of sisters on the team. This year's version are Christina and Tia Horner and Tiffany Tiffany, Tiffanie (UK)

 and Samantha Bull.

The good news this year is that all the sisters get along. Last year that wasn't exactly the case.

``One set of sisters was at each other's throats all the time,'' Lobos coach Rachel Behen said. ``I was pretty bad.''

was a key factor in the Lobos' late-season collapse, as they dropped their final three matches to waste a chance to win the Golden League title.

``It was ugly,'' Behen said. ``The fact is, we imploded im·plode

Littlerock hopes to avoid the same fate.

``It makes all the difference when the girls get along,'' Behen said.

Especially those sisters.
