VOLLEYBALL BEAT : HARP TEAM SHARP - AS USUAL.

Tom Harp's career as a football, soccer and volleyball coach at Granada Hills has been marked by two things: a commitment to the basics and lots of victories. Harp's combined record in the three sports is 294-106-6, including 183-61 in 16 years of volleyball.

He started the volleyball programs at Cleveland and Granada Hills. As head coach of the Highlanders, his teams have won four of the past six Northwest Valley Conference titles, two City 3-A titles and reached the 4-A final four times, including last year.

This doesn't figure to be the end of the run, either. Harp's junior varsity teams For the American rock band, see .

In sports, usually at the high school and college levels, members of a team who are not the main players in a competition (such as a football or basketball game) are called junior varsity players.
have won the past seven conference championships, all without an assistant coach.

``That's part of our strategy,'' Harp said. ``If you're good at the basics, you can win.''

Harp's also quite the motivator. After setter/hitter Donald Puathasnanon graduated, outside hitter Chris Tran said Harp convinced the team they could be just as good, if not better, than last year. The result has been a 13-0 season and a shot at winning the 4-A championship.

``He said we have so much more to work with, six players instead of one,'' Tran said.

Craig Revell, Flintridge Prep's 6-foot-5 junior outside hitter, recorded 97 kills last week in two matches - 65 in a five-game loss to Bell-Jeff and 32 in a four-game loss to Salesian - with tendinitis in both knees and his right (hitting) shoulder, and with two partially separated shoulders.

He ices and stretches his shoulders four to five times a day and ices his knees two to three times daily.

``My doctors still want me to take a two-week break, and I hope I can do it after (Junior Olympics),'' he said. His club team is participating in Junior Olympics in early July.

He's averaging about 30 kills for the 9-6 Rebels.

``I've kind of picked up my game,'' he said. ``I've gotten my timing down a little better.''

Burbank suffers net loss

Because Burbank's athletic department isn't complying with Title IX gender equity requirements, the 2-year-old boys' volleyball program will be discontinued, vice principal Chris Krohn said.

Burbank has three more boys' sports than girls': football, water polo and golf, although girls play on the golf team. Krohn said the school will add girls' water polo next fall. Boys' volleyball gets axed because it was the last sport added and there has been difficulty fielding full varsity and junior varsity junior varsity
